MJ's little flock

Yet the last two Ex Battery hen deaths I wrote about on my thread (Ella and Lima) died outside surrounded by the other chickens they lived with.
I don't think I've ever had a hen retreat to the coop or nest box to die.
I have not either. They have always been out with everyone else. Never in a nest box. The others always came to visit them as well. Here is Patsy visiting with Daisy, the greatest hen ever on the day she passed.

Well those are not entirely inconsistent. Eli spent her last day being visited by the whole tribe.
Her adoptive babies spent most of the day with her.
Then at roosting time she went in with the others but settled in a corner.
Her sister Babs came off the roost and checked on her in the night and again early morning when she had died.

I think perhaps Joyce went too quickly for her friends to realise and visit her. At least, not to my knowledge but I wasn't home that day.
