MJ's little flock

I managed to separate Mary from her friends and gave her some tiny bread portions with a 0.5ml of ibuprofen for children on them. Hope that's not an overdose. She's a very heavy hen.

She has an appointment with Mark first thing in the morning.

ETA I found Shad's pain relief images and realise I should have given her around 15ml as I think she's around 3kg.

She's struggling to find her food, but getting a little of it. I've put a protective zone around her and kept her separate from her friends.

Except for Janet. I've allowed Janet to be with Mary and that was a good call because she reminded Mary where the dry food is and now Mary is tanking up.

One of my girls laid a soft-shelled egg. :( It wasn’t in the nest but on the ground. Snowy is nearly two and Angel is one. Can young hens lay a soft-shelled when there is no underlying problem?
Yes, it can be a one time glitch, even if it happens a few times it's something to watch but not always an issue.

I don't remember if they are on layer feed or all flock ? If they are on all flock and have access to egg shells or oyster shells on the side, sometimes it can happen they don't eat enough of it.

Did you see what the eye looked like before it was shut closed ?
She looks alert enough on the video.
I hope it's not too serious.

Eye wounds can look impressive and heal fine. I saw that with my hen Brune when she was first attacked by a hawk ; but then later when Blanche was attacked by a hawk again, there was absolutely no visible sign of injury and I thought it would heal too, and she ended up loosing her sight.

I saw it a little, but not up close. It looked like the lid was torn or something like that. But the actual eyeball looked normal.

I guess the extent of recuperation depends on how much of the eyeball was damaged.

Hopefully it will be a good outcome :fl If anyone can help her, Mark can. Remember when he undertook exploratory surgery for her slow crop and ended up removing that fat lump from around her hernia? Incredible.

Hoping for the best, and let us know when you have news. She has such beautiful dark eyes.
It's a thing with chickens that just when everything seem fine all of a sudden it doesn't 🙁.
Yeh. The little rascals like to keep us on our toes.

They were all doing so well adjusting to their new roost. Even tonight, Mary insisted on going to the new roost. They love it.

I'll get up very early and put her in the travel basket for her vet appointment before she's awake.

Oh I do hope everything works out - it looks painful and swollen indeed.
That said, she found the bit of bread she dropped on the floor with no trouble at all.
Janet is a good friend to have.

Hoping for the best
:fl
Thanks RC. I've just taken her off the roost and put her into the travel basket. She was so well behaved. I put the basket in the spare bedroom for now. It's only 4am so I'll get some more sleep, hopefully Mary will too, and head off in the car in 4 hours from now.

Hope you got back to sleep ok and that Dr Mark can fix her! :fl

He'll know the best course of action.

Also, I think I did give her an ok dose of ibuprofen. The suspension I used is 100mg/5ml so 0.5ml would have been 10mg, which is perhaps a little small for her. If she's 3kg, she should have 0.75ml next time.
