MJ's little flock

For about a decade, my brother was a chef on the Indian Pacific and Ghan trains. It's quite hard work in a very small galley. Was that the sort of cooking on the slow train in Spain? Or was it travellers cooking for themselves?

I would like to see Iceland one day. The volcanic springs, wild ponies, and rugged landscape is appealing. Not too sure about all the fish in the diet though. Years ago it wouldn't have given me pause for thought, but today...

Marvellous story about tea in Egypt. It was very hospitable of him to bring the tea and gas bottle instead of simply fixing the bike and leaving you all to your own devices.
Iceland is on my list as well. It seems like a fascinating place. One of our friends honeymooned there. They loved it.

Another one-liner from me: I once unexpectedly came across a painting by van Gogh, I turned a corner in a gallery and there it was, and between the surprise and it's poignant beauty (it struck a balance between feverish effervescence and frozen fear of itself), I was moved instantly to tears.
Amazing.

It was a painting I had seen in photographs many a time, but I had no idea where it was hung, so to suddenly happen upon it and to immediately realise how little of it iI had seen in those photos was quite a moment. The shimmer of light on oil paint is quite something.
I had a reaction similar to that when I finally saw The Scream in person. I had always kind of dismissed it until I saw it in person. Pictures do it no justice. It had such an effect on me. I could not move for some time.

Or foolish!
As I mentioned, there was a time in my life when I seemed to always be in the wrong place at exactly the wrong time!
This reminded me of a routine I had which was to try and call my parents to tell them I was OK. As in 'don't worry when you see the news, I am fine'.
In those days that was hard to do and often required navigating one's way to a post office to place a call or send a telegram.
I didn't manage that for the Kashmir incident.

They must have been so worried.

Finding out in a milkshake parlour in Boston that you get the contents of the stainless steel mixing jug and not just a cup of it.:D

Standing on the edge of Etna with plumes of gas bursting around me and lava trickling out of various fissures wondering if my boots would catch fire.

Riding part of one the the Geat Train Jouneys featured in the series they made from Bombay to Puna.

Getting arrested at the Pakistan border.:(

Hitching a lift from Thailand to Cambodia on a motorized raft smuggling consumer goods.:fl

Sound like good adventures. Arrested at the Pakistan border with which country?
I have had a few adventures on different parts of Pakistan's border at different times myself.
This is all giving me an itch to return to that part of the world - though I think it is all much more dangerous now (not that it was exactly safe before!). So I will flip through my memory banks instead while I still have them intact.
