I went for a row on the lake this morning. I’ve only just noticed a house near the boat shed has chickens!

I don't know how tiny the bantam Orpington chicks will be.

Much bigger than the Dutch bantams I had. Bantam Orpington are rather big for bantams. The hens will be around 1 kg when they are full grown. My Dutch are only 500 g. My Amrock hens will be 850-900 g. Boys are always bugger.

I know it's a typo but boys do tend to be a bit of a bugger, especially where neighbours are concerned!

What a great place for the chickens! How was your row?

When I say 'near', they were a couple of streets away, but still in a nice area. My row was much better than last week, I had an absolute Baz last week (for our international friends; 'Baz' is the Aussie version of Cockney rhyming slang, as in Barry Crocker, shocker). I was in a single scull last week and just couldn't get it together, which was hugely frustrating. Today I was in a double and whilst I was in bow (which means I have to steer and I can't see where we're going as you row backwards) and we both got soaking wet, it was a much better row. It was even a bit Zen every so often!

Here are the ladies I made friends with this morning. There are more and I think someone was laying as I could hear a soft, crooning clucking.

It’s a bit of a pest, especially as I can’t use my peripheral vision as I’m short-sighted, but you keep having to check what’s behind you. There’s debris in the lake and you don’t want to damage the boats, or run into anyone else.

I got myself 2 shade sails, 3x3m square.

I hung one on the side and it goes up and over. I wasn't brave/silly enough to climb on top of the run, so I hung the second one from below and consequently had to bend it around a post. But that's ok. I may ask my brother to see if he pull it tighter. He may even be willing to climb up on top. That would be good because it would remove the low point, which as it is, is going to act as a rain spout.

The shade in this corner of the run is quite nice now!
