Not about chickens.

I saw something upsetting this morning. Putting it in a spoiler in case you'd rather skip it
I was out for a morning walk and went out to the end of the jetty. The sea was quite calm and clear And there were no people fishing or crabbing, which is unusual. I looked down into the water and saw a big crab, the size of a dinner plate walking along under the water! It suddenly changed direction and made a dash for a white plastic shopping bag sitting on the bottom.

It started eating the plastic bag 😢 I couldn't stay until the end. It was too saddening and enraging.

WHO THREW THAT PLASTIC BAG INTO THE SEA??? Only an utter jerk does that.

As the weather was delightful, I spent the whole weekend working on chicken tasks. I cleaned out the big run, including the roosting box, little coop (which is used as a nest), and the nest box on the ground, which is also in use from time to time. The roosting box was cleaned out with the power washer.

Everything was taken out and cleaned. I raked up all the loose straw and feathers and removed them. I used the magnet and picked up a dustpan-sized pile of metal bits and pieces.

Then I detached the ramp from the little coop and reattached it so that it's more easily removed for cleaning. It doesn't sound like much, but it took a good long while :gig

I shovelled the wood shavings out of the big coop and cleaned it out with the power washer.

I used screened sand from the backyard as bedding in the roosting box. I'm not sure it's hygienic enough. I may use clean sand from the hardware store in future.
Wow! That was a lot. You must feel like you really accomplished something! :clap :clap

Poor crab. :( The bag's probably washed in from somewhere. I wish there was a way we could turn plastic back into natural elements safely and get us out of this problem. Scientists are finding microplastics in brains and placentas, apparently (haven't looked up a peer-reviewed journal to see if that's actually the case).

That's a good point. I jumped to concluding someone had thrown it in because I see those bags being used by fishing people on the jetty most mornings.

I've been joined by a little poppet for a chat before her bed time.
