MJ's little flock

I'm very satisfied with the puppy training pads in the brooder. One side is slightly rougher than the other and it makes a very good surface for their feet. And the pads are great at absorbing moisture. The only problem is that the ones I bought go to landfill. If there's a compostable version, I'll get that one next time.

This morning's video mostly features Martha the lavender chick eating her third breakfast. All the noises are the other chicks investigating the various temptations of the mobile phone.

If you look carefully you'll see a few fuzzy moments at the bottom of the screen.

I love these. Keep eating and growing little one. 🥰

I had some unopened clean sand (prepared and packaged for a child's sand pit). I thought perhaps the chicks might like a little to dust bathe in.

They ate it. And they weren't going to stop. So I took it away again.

One of the AIs says it's actually beneficial if the sand is clean (which it is - its packaging was unbroken).

Should I be worried?

Nope. But I would not put it back.

I wait until they are more than a week old and then add dirt from where they will eventually be living so they can pick up the normal bacteria from there.

I know that's widely practiced but we know for sure the environment has Marek's. We also know their vax would still need 2 more weeks before being fully prophylactic.

So I'll hold off on exposure until after the vax is robust.

The sand is grit for chicks. No problem if they eat from it. Good to take it away if the chicks eat a lot of sand You can give it again in a few days.

They learn what is good for them and what is too much.

Do you provide chick grit?
The sand they have eaten shouldn't do them any harm; a bit of grit essentially.
