Hmmm. emu eggs can't cost that much - can they. Maybe they have a buy one, get one special and you guys can share.

Maybe one day Trader Joes will offer free range Emu eggs and you can try hatching those. People have written in to BYC about hatching chickens from some of their eggs.

Free range emu eggs from TJ's does sound pricey to me! Is there a market for it?

Hmm... Then we have to worry about the neighbours, how would they like a pack of emus next door. ha ha I am just imagining their faces.

Who was making dinner and what was for dinner?

I think I've got it!!! (only an idea though) My theory is that because use still air (that's correct, right?) you need a heat shield so that you don't have cool and hot spots. But for me I am using a fan so the heat will be mostly spread out. Make sense? That's the only thing I can think of. Lol

Yup, mine is still air. I imagine you're right that, with a fan, you don't need a heat shield. Totally make sense. =)

Wow, I wish I was handy enough to remake an incubator! Great job!

lol I don't know if I'm handy; it's just a piece of cardboard. I got the idea from another homemade incubator design I found on here. Thanks. =)

I agree. I build chicken coops, so that should count for something. XD

I agree with Mitch too. I think you should try it. There's a thread with homemade incubator ideas. If you want, I'll send you the design that I based my modification on. It's super simple and easy. =)
And hatching is so much fun!!!

Don't worry, I'm a fast typer and won't leave! Have to go buck hay and feed though...I'll have to look up duck coops later.

And yes, I'll have to do a duck coop thread with pictures!

I'm pretty sure all duck breeds are loud, but I've only ever owned Pekins...so I can't say much for Mallards 'cept they're a lighter breed and more prone to flying around. Lol. Sorry not much help. Wow, thats awesome you actually read up on your stuff, Mitch!

Today I went out and got some pictures of the birds. Cosette is looking better, although she can be quite deceptive about how she is doing. All the other birds are happy, except for Marius who is still mad about being separated from the girls.

Gavroche and friends are doing well. All are healthy and are getting less edgy around people, which is nice.

Tomorrow the eggs get shipped so I should have them sometime this week. Nervous about how my home-made incubator will do, but I'll just do the best I can and hope I get some chicks out of it.
My current hatch is still doing well, hoping to see some Faverolle chicks next week!

Here are the pictures,

Cosette curious as always.

Eponine picking through the weeds.

One of the Pumpkins plants.

Gavroche. Not to happy about the interruption.

One of the Australorp chicks.

Another one.

Gavroche with two of the Aussies. They all jumped into the picture. =)

All four chicks.

Glad Cossette is at least well enough to fake it.
Cute chicks!!!

Found a nest in the little tree sitting in our front yard.

I think this is an American Robin's work. =)

If they're really small (smaller than banty eggs) then it's probably a Robin. =)
Wish I had chickens that lay eggs that color!!!

Not necessarily, I think that some auctions limit themselves to large livestock. But maybe that applies to most, I only know about mine. :)

I submit the idea that a livestock auction accepts and sells what it can hold, and there are probably safety regulations and laws governing what situations chickens and other sensitive livestock can be in. KWIM?
