You wouldn't believe that documentary, though. The dentists call it "Mountain Dew Mouth" and it's so much worse there. My sister drinks it all the time.

Oh, who is old enough to remember Kickapoo Joy Juice???

*shudder* Splenda is scary... chlorinated sugar that was an accidental discovery...
That's scary enough, but in general if a rat won't eat it, then I won't...
Lab rats starved rather than eat that (and they eat vaseline for pete's sake)... but the tests did show weight loss.

Sugar isn't great for you, true enough, add in all the processing and that really doesn't help...
I reckon the white stuff I use is bad enough without bleaching it.

Sorry, person pet peeve of mine... something that's only tested on 30 humans before being approved by the FDA...
But someone who wants to grow their own meat/eggs just for THEIR OWN consumption has to go through miles of red tape... makes no sense.

Hi!
Thinking about it, I can see where cane sugar would make a huge difference in taste compared to corn syrup.
I was raised on GA cane syrup and the taste of cane syrup is too much for me --- if that is the taste difference, I'd probably opt for the artifically-sweetened choice.
That makes me all the more glad I never developed a taste for sweet.

This is really off topic but back in the 1600s an 1700s the English kept there teeth till pretty late in life. But the big mystery was that the colonists were almost all losing there teeth by 30. The conclusion of the time was that the colonists ate bread with every meal.

I have no belief that bread was the issue but I bet something about the diet changes that were made when we crossed the pond had alot to do with it. Many of the "dirt poor" of the Appalachians an everywhere else still eat a diet close to that. So even before the "Coke" issue came around there was a diet issue effecting there teeth. Then add in the "coke" issue an what do you get.

What was the issue? The only 2 new thing to our diet at the time that I can think of was Muscidines an corn. Muscidines are almost the same thing as the old world grapes but corn was a new thing... So is corn the hidden tooth killer?

Makes ya think.

I can't drink a sugared cola because I hate that syrupy, slimy taste it leaves. Guess I've been drinking diet colas for way too long. Sugar gives me headaches and aspartame gives me headaches, so I'm left with water or splenda-sweetened ones, if I want a cola drink.

That could very well be true. Simple carbs like corn, bread, potatoes etc can be converted to sugars in the mouth by saliva. Could be a problem especially if the settlers weren't brushing.
