Bring her here to BYC and she can read all the "dogs killed my chicken" posts or the posts about trying to save birds that have been attacked and badly mauled by dogs.

Maybe you can help her "get it" She could turn out to be a good neighbor. the next looker at the house could have multiple dogs.

I just found this thread and I would like to second all those who say heck no you do not need to be sorry at all. I also would have said the same thing you did. I see no point in candy coating anything. I am up front and to the point. You are much nicer than I am by far.

My moms place has people much much closer than I do. The first time we ever see a dog it gets a nice splat and thump of frozen paint balls. Bright blue it leaves one hell of a welt and tell you what she is the only one in her area who does not have the dogs from across the road in her yard. The new people to her area learn very fast as the blue paint is easy to see and the next then in the drive way is my mother who is very polite telling them the next time she comes back it will be a dead dog .

Every person has the right to protect their life and property. Where I live there is no Animal controle no leash law pretty much nothing. But the right to defend ones self and property always applies.

Smile and tell her you just put up some fox leg traps, and that there have been trying to catch the pest for weeks. You won't be seeing that dog for months!

Well, well, well. The open house was today and while there was some very good interest, the irresponsible dog owner was not amoung them.

Luckily the realtor is a friend of DH and she let us look at the list of prospects. Some are familiar and one was even one of my employees. I would love it if she moved in there. She has animals and is what we all want our neighbors to be, and what we all try to be. Responsible, respectful, friendly.

I just wish I could crunch the numbers the right way and buy the place myself.

Great responses to this post. I appreciate everyone's opinions. After thinking about this quite a bit, I think it's best that I have a chat with her and let her know that I do not apologize for what I said, just the manner in which I said it.

I think most of you are nuts and wouldn't want you for neighbors. SSS is just a terrific comment. I often wonder why threads that go this way aren't closed. Your gonna shoot her dog is the first thing you say to her. Just terrific what a great neighbor you are. I have an older women next to me that will be moving. When prospective buyers come I'll let them know I have chickens and foxhounds and my dogs bark at every stray cat that comes through the properties, but not much else. My chickens are fenced but if your dog or cat does any harm to them your going to pay for it if I have to go to court to get restitution. I've had a dog get out of my kennels on two occassions in 10 years I find it troubling that many of you state you would shoot the dog if he was on your property posing a percieved threat to your chickens. Living in a society, in a neighborhood comes with responsibilties, many, like the women the thread was written about could give a rats behind about those responsibilities, many like the original poster let thier personal responsibilities, fall to the side, out of frustration. If you live amongst others then you need to take some responsibility for keeping your animals safe as well- safe from those that don't give a rats behind. There are many steps between there and shooting a dog. Cripes people being neighborly and rational while making your point isn't a sign of weakness. Keystonepaul

i never in a million years could of ever imagined that anything could ever entice me to kill someone Else's pet. i am a animal lover to no end. last year my neighbors dog started killing off my birds. i was told by to many people that once a dog does a kill it wont stop. i have to agree because of the look in this dogs eyes when he comes into my yard at night. i am not afraid anymore of loosing my birds to this dog. in fact im not afraid if i have to kill this dog anymore

It was what she told the person after she let her dog go unleashed in a new area and came on to her property. She as an owner needs to give a "rats behind" and not let her dog be running around on others property.

Trust me you wouldnt want me as your neighbor the first time its a paint ball with a visit by myself. The second is a bullet and me dropping it off on your front step. Done it more than once and will do it again if there is a need. I would expect no less if my dogs went off my land and on to anothers. Thus why my animals do not leave my land.

If you are a good owner you have responsibilties such as to keep your animal on your land. I can have my animals do whatever and whenever they want on my land as you can yours but if either cross the line then its fair game. If I choose to have 40 chickens run around with out a fence then guess what I can its my land. I do not need to build a fence because the somone who does not give a "rats behind" to keep whatever they own at home. A good neighbor who has responsibilities will keep all of the animals they own off my land. That is a neighborly thing to do.​
