@DelaneyMGB25 Lovely birds! I am supposed to be picking up some MGBs this evening. I raise d'Uccles and Call ducks for show. Really wanting to get into Modern or OE Game Bantam exhibition. Do you have any tips on what to look for as far a quality goes?
Yes, I do! But, most of it totally depends on the colors you’re getting! Do you know which colorations?
But for body type, you want them to look “Moderny” if that makes sense! Their necks and locks should be pretty long and look elegant. A LARGE pointer, is you want a flat back! Most larger chickens have a slight dip or hump in their backs. You DO NOT want Moderns to be like this! Their backs should be flat, from their neck to the base of their tail feathers, where they should SLIGHTLY curve back up.
2 big bad things are white earlobes and split wings. Most people don’t mind white earlobes, because they can be cut off. But if you are looking to breed, I suggest not risking it, because they can be a dominant gene, and you’ll just have to cut them off all your birds. Split wings, I’m not to sure if this is the actual name for defect, but it’s what I’ve called them. It when the wing is missing a feather (again, not sure what the feather name is, but I’ll take a picture of it in my birds). BUT keep in mind it is a feather the birds don’t get with their first feathers! Pullet and cockerels won’t devolop it until later.
I also have a standards book for birds. When you reply with what kind you’re getting, I’ll take some pictures of the specifics!
