Great thanks! Do they need a heater in the winter?
It depends on your setup/where they stay. I’m not using one, a heater, or a heat lamp (I suggest NEVER using them with moderns!!! It burns/frys up their feathers!!) but my birds are also in a pen with 3 enclosed walls, two to a pen with bedding, and in my garage.
Where are your modern/s kept? Do you have any picturesque of your setup?

Well my one modern is currently kept in a crate in the house at night, and goes out in the run during the day. She can't fly well enough to roost and it gets down to the high 30s in the coop at night, so I think she would be cold on the floor by herself. The other birds are leghorns and roost in the rafters. If I get more moderns and they can roost together I think they could keep each other warm at that temp?

Oh my!! I totally missed this post!! I also (Finally!! sorry for the lateness) have the audio!
As for your little hen, keeping her in the house when it gets cold is a good idea. If you get more moderns, that can fly, I’m afraid they might leave her to freeze. I had one bird that could not fly at all, and she couldn’t even get to the very short roost, and everyone else left her to sleep on the ground. If your run/coop is big enough, you could possibly purchase a pen from rural king or a local feed store, and place it inside your coop, and teach your moderns to sleep in there at night, together, then they would be able to stay warm together.

Here’s the video! Sorry it’s a screen recording, but I wasn’t really in the mood to overlay another video. So at tleast this little shortcut works :lau

It depends. I clean pens (I have a 9 hole box/pen thing on wheels) every Saturday, and sweep up what I can. I do a thorough clean twice a year, One in the the fall (did it today) and one early spring. So most of the dust is kept to a minimum, and when it does accumulate, it gets cleaned up, or blown out sooner or later. The garage doors are opened almost every afternoon, and we leave about half a foot of space open 24 hours for air flow, which also keeps dust from settling. The only thing I dislike about them bei in there, is poop being stuck to my flier when I turn them loose, and the amount of Sawdust that gets in EVERY SINGLE CROOK AND NANNY!!!:he:lau

I have some brown red moderns from show stock that I recently acquired for breeding purposes. I was wondering if anyone with good working knowledge of the breed could give me opinions on quality of my birds.

Thanks in advance.

Also they have these naked spots on their wings, and they have recently scabbed up a little. It's on all of my cocks, is this normal?

Brown reds were the first moderns I showed. They are pretty birds!
I can’t tell much about your females. The first picture of you male bird looks like a good show quality bird. Jim Sallie is a Poultry judge from California. He once wrote that it would do exhibitors well to breed for smaller bodies and longer legs. I’m not a Poultry Judge by any means. But, if these were my birds I would breed to have the birds wings more parallel to the ground when the bird is stationed. When I get the chance, I will review the ABA Standard and post some things that might help. You have a good start.

The first rooster and the hens seems to have very pale faces. This may just be health/stress, but if it is their natural color, that isn’t something a judge is looking for. The second rooster (with the spots, I replied to your other thread asking about them) has nice coloring, but I’d like to see both rooster’s lacing, if that’s possible!
The first roo looks to have good coloring, but he does seem to be molting so it’s difficult to tell for sure. He seems to have nice legs, but stance wise, they should be up on their toes, not quite flat footed. As said above me, his wings are held low, which isn’t the greatest, but if the hens have good held wings (which the one in the back does seem to have a nice carriage) then the babies should have good wing carriage as well, because hens pass on body type/carriage, while cocks pass on the coloring, typically.
Some better pictures of the hens, and of the breast/lacing of them all would be helpful! Have an amazing Christmas!!

Like previously stated, I am not a Poultry Judge. It’s really hard for me to Judge Birds by photos. For example, the ABA Standard says in part, “ STATION: Exceedingly erect; model posture is for head to be carried at 90 degrees above the horizontal above the feet; contraction of wings and thighs to the body when in hand”. Please remember that some breeds may lean toward a fad. To find out what’s winning, go to shows and see the differences for yourself. I don’t know how to attach photos, but if you want to send me a private message with your email, I will send you some photos of winning Birds. You can look at them and see what changes you want to make.
