A friend gave us a couple of nice Splash Modern bantam Hens. We haven’t done anything with them. At this time we are just breeding Jim Sallee’s strain of Birchen Modern Bantams. Does a Birchen X Splash give Silver Blues?

I’m not sure, but most likely not. While splash and sports might look alike, sports have silver blue blood/genetics that show when passes down, while splash are a totally different coloration. You might get some birds similar in color, but I’d assume nothing that would match the description of a silver blue.

It depends on the quality you are looking for. Some hatcheries sell eggs/chicks, but in bad hatchery quality. Some adult birds being sold are lower as well. You could do some searching for people on Facebook that have moderns, and occasionaly thin their flock. There’s also this site:

That have some lemon blues and some other colors, I didn’t look too much at the description after I saw Lemon Blue on the list.

Also, you’ll probably find better quality in sports than the color being sold, because since the sports can’t be shown, only bred, when they have extra people normally sell them then keep them. I’m not sure where to find them, I bought mine from an older show man who was selling most of his flock.

Loving my Modern Game Bantams. After a few years, they moved from my wishlist to my coop. They're 11.5 weeks.

They're sweet and slightly needy. (They're afraid to walk all the way to the coop from the tractor. Each night they begin the journey with the other bantams, but get scared and turn around and run back to me. They then get picked up & carried the rest of the way. LOL)

I need to come up with some good names for them. The black is calmer and likes to be held. The blue is loud and vocal, but also likes to be held.

Maybe "Sticks" ? (or Styx for the black one)
Both hatched on July 4th, so patriotic names would also be appropriate.

Any ideas?

I got a little carried away with the photos.

It's been a while & we still love our MGBs. (Couldn't decide so I kept both girls)

Styx has been learning to play piano.

Stones decided to go broody. Do MGB even make good mothers? She kept stealing eggs & eventually settled on a golf ball. An experienced serama went broody a few days later, so that's when I decided to give them 4 fertile orpington eggs. The serama can flatten out and cover all 4 easily, but the MGB can only do 3. What normally happens is the serama sits on the eggs & the MGB sits on the serama. When the serama takes a break, the MGB gets all the eggs to herself. It's quite entertaining.

Is anyone still active here and NPIP certified? I'm really wanting to get into these but I can't find anyone willing to ship eggs/chicks or even adult birds out where I am

I'm sorry I cannot help, but I hope you find some.

I can relate and wanted them for years. I ended up getting eggs off eBay. The 1st time, none hatched..... most likely due to rough handling. The shells were intact but most were internally scrambled.

Last summer, I tried again. I either bought 6 or 8. The seller gave 2 extras. 3 showed signs of developing, but one quit early. Two hatched.

They do not lay many eggs per year, so that adds an extra challenge.

Here's a sneak peak at one of DS's 4-H projects. We started training Styx in the winter (Covid quarantine boredom....) Then sort of forgot about it. DS decided to take it over and turned the training into a fun project.
