I have always dreamed of owning these odd, long-legged beauties since I was a kid at the fair.
I was gifted four of my first chickens back in June 2016 - They are three Leghorns (SUPER sweet), and one barred rock.
I am hoping to get some Moderns this spring/summer or possibly next year if I have not been able to expand my coop like I hope to do.

Any advice for these birds would be greatly appreciated but the main reason for my post is that I have found a local gentleman that does quite a large order each year and has offered me to come pick from his shipment. How can you tell what color your modern will be as an adult?
It honestly does not matter but I'd love to get a red pyle.

Thanks for reading my post.

TL:DR How do you tell what color your modern chick will be?

If you go to ideal poultry's website (or perhaps the website of his source) and click on bantams; you will see "moderns". Click on each color bird and you will see what color the chicks are.

ETA It looks like of the colors Ideal offers, the yellow chicks are most likely to be red pyle, but could also be "splash" lemon blues. Find out what varieties he usually gets in the orders.

It can be tricky when they are ordered as a mixed thing -- have you asked him about whether he orders an "assortment" or "by breed"? The best option may be to ask him to order specifically for you in the color you want and include a request to the hatchery to mark them or package them so they are in a certain section of the shipping box (they'll do this if requested). Red Pyle are plain yellow/white as chicks - but so are some other color varieties. It can help to visit hatchery sites and view the images for each breed - they show adult and chick plumage images so you can learn what to look for and what to avoid (this is helpful to know for any breed you want to get into as it can avoid getting all invested in a chick only to realize some weeks later as it feathers out that you don't have what you were looking for -- learn what leg, beak, down/feather color, comb type, etc you should see at different stages)
