Modified Purina Coop with full instructions and pictures (STAGE 1)

OK. I finally figured it out. After studying the Purina plan, I went back to your video, and it all made sense! Didn't understand it at first, but I see where you're going! Thanks a zillion!!! I note the changes you made to the Purina plan by lengthening the coop. I like your re-design cause if one is going through all that trouble you might as well make it larger (the cost for the lumber should be minimal!). How many chickens do you plan to house in your coop?

Thanks, Tweakster! I was mistaken. You're right. Am looking at Step One only. But, you can see my later response that I finally figured out what they meant! Am not much of a carpenter, but I think with a little outside help I can build this coop. Its given me a lot of confidence!

Autocad, No Less!! Wow. Thanks a zillion for your thoughtful work. Thanks for walking us through the various stages in this project. You've given me the confidence to proceed! Some concerns related to the Purina plan:

(1) Their 34" drop down panel in the back that is supposed to allow for cleaning will make it difficult to stand up close in order to clean out the poop. It falls down, leaving a small barrier that gets in the way of standing up close to the coop to scrape away the poop and sand and stuff inside the coop. Have you had a chance to consider that? If so, how might you handle that? Might swinging that panel up and holding it in place somehow while cleaning be worthwhile exploring? Let me know your thoughts on this issue.

(2) I plan to install a fenced in outdoor run in front of the coop. The run will be the same width as the coop; hope to secure it enough so that its predator proof. So am thinking of moving the egg box to either the right or left side of the coop, so access to the eggs will be easier. Purina says to feel free to redesign it (and send them some photos). The run will be in front of the coop and access to the box will be a problem. Have not figured which side wall to install the egg box yet as it depends on how to arrange every thing inside.

I like the venting and the fact that you removed the need for cutting the wood at an angle. I am a bit concerned that there won't be enough ventilation with the purina coop I'm building (I live in the southeastern US and it gets very hot and humid here) and this looks like good way to get around the issue. My only concern would be what happens when it rains?

We will be building a roof soon, as well as adding shingles to it

great job.. woot! Tomorrow mid-morning we start phase two I will post later in the day .. We are planning sides and roof with pics and details! stay tuned! I am trying to decide on a venting solution.. since we live in CT I want to be able to close the vents down in really cold weather.. Thinking 1/2" metal cloth attached to a sliding system to not only clean but to remove and replace with solid plywood to keep heat in..

But not sure about ammonia level in cold of winter?

hey, we are doing the same for our run, width of coop to 25 feet down wind... enclosed like previous post with 2x4x8 pt and netting ... this coop is integrated into our garden so fertilizer is close by.. will look at issue with fold up door...maybe fold down with 2x4 to keep chips in until we clean it?

We have 6 chickens going in, but room for 8 comfortably. I am still working on a redesign of the internals for the perches.. i am not sure i like theirs and I want o place lay station on one side instead of the front of the coop.. makes for easier access. so I don't need to go into the run to retrieve the eggs. I have started the autocad drawing.. will have them up by end of weekend (hopefully) want to get all measurements/materials completed prior to uploading..

This is impressive, thanks for sharing this.

I've purchased 9 chicks (1) americauna, (3) Rhode Island Red (3) black australop (2) orpinton. They are a delight to watch their antics, so know its time to build a home for them. I will post pictures as soon as I have them.
