I didn't read through all the pages, but this is just simple math...
PC has posted a LOT of times to a lot of threads and engaged in conversation with a LOT of people. In any social interaction (people, animals, etc.) the ones that go out and socialize and help others more... well, they tend to get more "attention".
It would be interesting to do an experiment. Take the top 15 currently active posters on BYC and have each one of them post a topic of similar magnitude. Then take 15 active members from the middle, then 15 new users and do the same thing.
You can sorta use this list as a guide:

I bet there will be a direct correlation between how many total and recent posts that member has made and how many people anxiously come to converse with them. Sure, there will be some variation, but within a certain degree of standard deviation (example: I'm not as charismatic as PC, so I know I'd be an outlier with fewer replies) I bet you'd see a pretty close correlation.
Sure, call it "popularity" or call it karma... but I don't see anything wrong with people who have worked hard to be a part of any community getting a bit more attention.
I find comfort in the fact that almost every day newbies are posting about how wonderful and friendly BYC is. But nobody worry... BYC is an equal opportunity environment
