"No... Why?" Layla asked.

"Mmm, just wondering. Emery -- I mean my mum -- never had a mate, really. She was always the queen. Peter was the only one to really be her mate..." he was silent, and then spoke again. "I sometimes think of Peter as my father. He's the best one I've ever had. I mean, stallions sometimes tried to be a dad to me, but it never really worked."

"Ohh... I'm sorry.." She sighed.

He shrugged it off. "It's okay, though, really." His British accent seemed like a cloud that blocked the sun of American accents. It was a wonder that he had one. Perhaps one of the herds had been British? "Peter's nice and all, just shy."

"Oh..." She sighed, dipping her head in for a drink.

The two-legs walked on the edge of SkyHerd. "Adelphie please come here!" Shadow yelled.

Rufus nodded and was silent. He took a few sips of the stream water but, strangely, did not drink more. He lay down next to Layla and stared into the glassy water.

All was silent. Adelphie neither answered nor appeared.

Tears streamed down Shadow's cheeks. "Flip, please help me find her! They will destroy the herd!" She said, noticing the two-legs darts.

Rufus nodded absently. "Layla... how old are you?"

Flip breathed deeply. "Perhaps it's for the best that she's disappeared," he replied. "They cannot find her. More than likely she's hidden by instinct. She'll be safer than with you."

"Flip, I'm her mother! Even if I don't turn her in, I need to protect her!" She said, still crying worriedly.

"One year, two months. Why?" She asked.
