As some of you know (the whole world probably knows by now, really.) Dwkuska gave me some Polish Crested chicks at my request. All of them have been doing well till I checked in and noticed Mojo had dried poop stuck to his bum. I tried a baby wipe on it, and it did not come off. I tried getting it wet (found something on here about soaking it) and it did come off, along with a rather alarming amount of his fuzz.

Now my poor Mojo is a baldy butt, and I'm afraid this is not the end. :(

What causes this, how can I treat it, and how can I make him feel better?

Pasty butt is very common with chicks. They grow out of it within a few weeks. Keeping a constant supply of grit really helps, and some chicks seem to get it more than others. Check the butts often for the first few weeks. That way, if it happens again, you can clean it off easier. I like to check my chicks 3 times a day, and I've found myself congratulating a few for never having a pasty butt. Soak the butt in warm water until the poop loosens, then gently pry it off. As far as making him feel better... just keep his area clean, and he'll heal. By all means, don't let it go if it happens again. Pasty butt can kill because it backs everything up.

Also, some olive oil on the bum helps, too.

BUT, I have an EE/ Aracauna hen that is over a year old (maybe a year and a half) who has adopted me. She's kind of a wild girl, is skittish of people. But, she runs with my chicken gang now. She constantly gets a buildup of poo on her bum. Twice now, I've had to grab her at night (because she won't let me near her during the day) and soak her in warm, soapy water. So, it's not just chicks that have that.

i think one of the hens told him he lost his mojo
