molting help

My chickens have started their first molt. Is there anything I can do/should do to help them during this period?? They are feed layer pellets and oyster shells, and free range during the day. It's so sad to see all of their pretty feathers look so shabby!!! I know it's part of the natural process, but my girls are like pets, and I just want the best for them!!!

Increase the amount of protein consumed. If they are still laying then two processes are demanding more protein in addition to what is needed for maintenance. I like the additional protein to be of animal origin. You can use a little finisher / grower feed to provide needed protein.

Ideally only wing feathers should be replaced at this time of year, if more feathers then birds already stressed nutritionally or something is causing feather loss.
