My white leghorns are 14 months old. And i dont know if they have molted yet. How do i know when they do? There has always been alot of fethers in the yard from time to time but the egg laying is the same. I have 2 cochins that are the same age and they have not molted yet. Is there some thing wrong with them? Thanks for the help!

Pick them up and hold them. fold back their feathers and look for lots of new feathers growing out. Look especially under their necks, across their backs and near their tails.

If you see lots of pin looking feathers growing out and there's lots of feathers on the ground, then they're molting.

If they're still laying, then that's great. All of my hens are molting now, and I'm getting nothing.

My hens are almost 2 y.o. and I have only had one go through a hard molt, out of 5. Wyandottes and Giants.
