I do not understand why this procedure would be necessary with chicks that are going to homeowners as opposed to chicken farms?RESOLVED: Chick supplier has their beaks trimmed by laser- this, supposedly, does not hurt the chick and the beak (tip of the beak, on the top) eventually falls off. It WILL regrow, but less pointy and less destructive as they peck each other, this being the whole reason for the stupid procedure.
Good advice. Thanks. I know it’s just awful. ButThat's pretty severe. Sometimes they cut back so far that it doesn't grow back.
Hate it!! Make sure you have a deep enough food and water dish so they are able to eat and drink with those beaks
I do not understand why this procedure would be necessary with chicks that are going to homeowners as opposed to chicken farms? This is awful, poor little things. Good luck with them, I hope they manage to grow back reasonably well.
Well, thank you for rescuing them from a less than stellar future. May they bring you joy, eggs and chicks if you so wish them!!Good advice. Thanks. I know it’s just awful. But
The country store out here keeps them in-store around Easter for the kids to check out. 10 chicks for 7 day’s then they get a new batch. These lucky 40 go to a good home if someone asks to have them. Otherwise, it’s to the farm. So, the supplier must trim them all and these guys are just the lucky ones. I got the last batch of 10 chicks actually.![]()
That's Horrible! My BR rooster broke off the top of his beak a while ago, and my one year old tom turkey did it recently. There are videos of the hot blade debeaking that's commonly used but I had no idea there was a delayed action laser treatment! Yikes.
