Oh no! Keep an eye on those troublemakers!
As cute as they are, they may get clever!

I lost Daisy this morning. She was the EE - the 'big bully' of the 7. When I got home from work last night, she seemed to be breathing hard and had her beak slightly open. Just wasnt herself. I instantly got them all started on Tetracycline in their water. Everyone else seemed to be ok. This morning Daisy was a gonner on the floor of the box. I dont know what happened. I hope the rest will be ok. I have never lost a little one before.

Aw. :hugs

Sometimes it just happens. I had a close call with my Biddy-bird and frankly, I was surprised she pulled through. Sounds like maybe the same thing? Biddy was kind of gasping for breath on her first night here. She had been chilled from the drive home and I had to clean her rear a few times because of poo sticking to her.

Make sure there are no drafts in your brooder and watch your babies for signs that it's too cold. Do they huddle under their heat source more than they should? Use past experience with chicks if you need to.

Have you been washing your hands or changing your clothes between interacting with your adults and interacting with the babies? Is it possible that you carried something in from the adults? Remember that the babies probably won't have as strong of an immune system as your adults, and so the grown-ups might have something they're immune to that the babies are not yet.

I hope everything's fine and it was not something that the other babies have caught! :fl

Pipd, that is what I am thinking happened. That i brought something in from the big girls. I have made sure I washed really well and stuff when I come inside and before I play with the babies, but i am sure some things just happen. I have had my big girls on Albon for a cocci outbreak and they just went off of it the other day. I have one big girl that has had respiratory issues in the past, but I have been able to control it with meds, so I am betting that is what took my Daisy. I will feel really bad if it was my fault, but it happens. I stopped by home to check on them at lunch, and the other 6 seem to be doing just fine so far. I still have the water medicated though. I really hate to use drugs, but what else can I do?

Temp is holding between 85 and 92 degrees and nope, not a one has been huddled. They are either sprawled out like a bear rug, or hanging out together. No one is crouched together or seeming to try and get away from teh light either. I think that's ok. No drafts as well I dont think.

The one I lost is the 'toe picker' one in my pictures.

:hugs I hope everything's okay, then! If you suspect respiratory involvement, you could always hold them to your ear or use a stethoscope and see if you can hear any crackling while they breath or anything. If you aren't seeing anyone else show symptoms, then I suspect it was just something internally wrong with Daisy.
