mom's just don't understand... advice?

Husbands and wives don't always understand either. You need to respect your mom but let her know the reasoning of why you want more than 2. Best of luck to you and enjoy the babies.

I agree w/ everyone too. 3 is better than 2. I had 3 and 2 got killed by an animal and my 1 lonely silky still isn't the same (it's been 2 months now) She tries to "hang" out with the my BR but still she is missing something. Thankfully for her I just hatched some more chicks and got 2 silkys out of the bator!

Have you asked your mom what you need to do to show her that you will be responsible and take care of them.

Also, you need to follow through and not have her cleaning up after them or feeding them. Show her you can and will, and I bet her attitude about them improves.

Yea Mom, You won the battle so to speak. Now win the war by tending to your chicks and showing your mom you can and will be responsible for them. So happy for you and i know you will enjoy your new pets. Keep reading here and learn as much as you can. Keep an eye on the sick bird section so you will know what to do if you have problems. O Yea, Welcome to chickens and BYC.

Just make sure you keep them well taken care of, most importantly poop patrol. If your mom steps in chick poo ONE TIME, you'll never hear the end of it. And the smell... you can easily get used to it by spending a lot of time with them, so make it a habit to clean everything once a day.

I wrote my dad a 12 page report on why I "needed" chickens, converted the giant dog house, built my own run out of scrap wood, and settled in 4 Bantams, 3 girls, 1 boy. And I'm 27 years old and married! Just staying at his house for awhile waiting on my husband to figure out what's next with the Army.

Working on adding 3 layers... but I haven't found any I like. I want Partridge Rock hens, to match the color scheme of the Bantams.

He brought them kitchen scraps yesterday, his way of saying "I guess they're alright"... made a comment on my building quality, and a comment on how the area smelled like pine and not chickens.

do you have pics of the silkies you plan to buy? if so post them and maybe we can tell you which look more like Pullets than roos.

If not do you get to pick the 3? if so look for extra longer fluff on the tops of their crests, this usually indicates a male, also look for narrow, small combs, and no wattles if they are beardless. This may help you get a better percentage of females.

my wife didnt believe me about ducks either...till one of my buddys ducks died leaving him with one. He brought it over for me and it was almost sickly. Got her in there with mine and she has gotten fat and is laying now.
