Karla , its real hard to tell what color eggs they are going to lay untill you get eggs. I have one that looks just like a RIR that lays a blue egg, I kew she was a mix, she has a straight comb, and no puffy cheeks, but I saw her lay her egg, so I know she is a blue egg layer. I'm between Billings and Roundup, so I'm a ways from Butte. i do sell eggs, and should have chicks in the spring.
I wuld like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.

Has anyone fed Big Sky organic feed? I got what I thought was a good score on some layer mash last Sunday and have been feeding it mixed with my reg. feed. Yesterday I broke one of the eggs washing it and went to feed it to the barn cats and the yolk was a yucky green color and when I broke the yolk open it was almost black inside. Then this morning I was making pancakes and both the eggs I put in the pancake mix looked the same. I ate them and am still alive so far,HaHa, But really, has anyone incountered this? Should I toss the feed, or would it be safe to give to my cows? The chickens really seem to like it, and production as increased in the short time they have been on it, but I don't want yucky green/black yolks.

How strange! Uh I would call the company or send off an email... I haven't heard of anything like that, but ya never know! Is the protein content the same or higher than your old feed? Hope you figure out what's gonig on! That's a little creepy!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Protein is about the same, but it does have alot of alfafa and sea kelp in it, so it might be the extra green stuff, I think I will send the company an e-mail tho, thats a great idea.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Well, so far no more of the green yolks, I'm wondering if it was the kelp and they just picked out the new food and over ate the first few days. They sure seem to like it, and my egg production has more than doubled, and the egg count keeps going up every day.
Looks like we are in for a few days of cold snowy weather. It started out nice and fairly warm this morning, but a cold wind has been blowing more and more clouds in all day, we've just had a little rain so far, but sure feels like snow on the way.
9gerianMile I see you are looking to trade some eggs, I would send you some of mine if you would like, this is too early for me to start hatching, but I would take some of yours in the spring. In my layer flock my roos are Blue and Black Copper Marans, Black Ameraucana, and a very pretty Gold Duck Wing EE. My hens, Blue &Black Copper, and Cuckoo & Golden Cuckoo and Wheaten Marans, Blue, Black & White Ameraucans, Buff, Blue, Black & Lav. Orps, RIR, SL & BLRW, and a few EE and OE. Let me know if you are interested

Quote: wow what does a gold duck wing look like? I will have to do a search , and I need a new orphington. maybe you could sell me some eggs, wyndott would be nice to. Maybe I can take a trip up your way this spring. Sounds like it was the kelp that turned your eggs green, Im still laughing that you ate one LOL.

I don't know if I could have eaten the egg if I was making sunny side up, but mixing it in the pancake mix I couldn't really tell it was green. It is rather funny tho.
This is my Gold Duck Wing EE

Clint is my head roo, he is smaller than the huge Maran roos, but sure can put them in their place when they get out of line. One of my Black Copper Maran roos was giving me the "nasty rooster" eye today, I puffed myself up and followed him all around the coop untill he turned tail and ran, but he may have to go to freezer camp if he keeps that up, I won't have a nasty roo.
Its been snowing all day here, but temps have been nice so I've only got about an inch or so on the ground. I hope roads don't get bad over night, I have to leave for work by 5:30 am, and I hate slippery roads.
