Montana

Thank you all for your information, I have passed it on to my sister along with this site for her friend. I am headed back to Michigan on Friday. Hopefully it wont be another 5 years before I come back and visit. I love Montana, wish we could move back, maybe when we retire. Have a great summer.

I finally got my girl broody, it's been a year but finally she is full on and not letting anyone near her nest. If only I had some fertile eggs lol, but I think I'm going to try adding day old chicks instead. I'm hoping a friend has some day olds ready to hatch out soon, I'm only wanting 2 more hens so hoping for 5 babies from her. Wish us luck!

Good luck Karlamaria! Had our first predator attack today! The chickens were free ranging about 7:00 PM and we heard quite a ruckus outside and looked out and the neighbor's boxer dog was attacking a BO hen - feathers were flying. Our new rooster did not do anything, but the whole flock was making all the noise they could. I yelled at the dog to go home, and he did, and the BO hen walked toward the run. We went down to check on her and could not find her, after a 20 minute search we found her hunkered down in tall grass in a ditch just off my lot, afraid for her life. Picked her up and found no broken bones or blood, and she could still walk, so I carried her to the coop and put her inside. Hope she doesn't have severe internal injuries. No doubt, if she survives, she probably won't be laying eggs for awhile. She was wearing an apron, which might have helped her. Called and left a message with the neighbor to please keep his dog tied up in the afternoons. No response yet.

oh Dug that's scary, poor girl, saying prayers she will do fine. Thank goodness for the aprons ! I just ordered 4 aprons for my girls today, not caused by roosters but a few naughty pluckers who are being agressive and plucking my girls. So I got 3 different kinds of aprons, one with shoulder pads, one that has a tail protecter as her tail feathers are being plucked and 2 regular ones . Our broody is really holding strong, and sitting on duds lol, but hopefully we will have chicks tonight or tomorrow to go under her. I have another thinking of going broody, she wants the eggs to, we shall see , I may have two mamas.

Hi Everyone,
We just bought a house in Billings/Lockwood and I'm looking for places to get fertile eggs/chicks come later this summer after we get a coop set up. Also, is there a good organic feed available locally? I really know next to nothing about the area when it comes to chickens. And finally - are snakes much of a concern? We're moving from a high elevation in Wyoming where we really didn't have that problem. I'm sorry if I'm repeating, I read through some of the pages but nearly 300 is a lot :)

Fertile eggs shouldn't be a problem, depending on what breeds you want.

I believe there is some organic feed made in Missoula (?), I think Murdoch's carries it, but I'm not certain.

Snakes. I'm too high for snakes, but I bet you'll want to keep your eyes open for rattlers over there. Someone local would be able to tell you a bit more about how common they are in your area.

3BirdGirlz:

Where in Great Falls are you located?  I'm glad to see someone local (to me) on here. !

I'm out by Vaughn...Sun Prairie estates with our 5 acre funny farm :)
We did awesome at the Hamilton show! My girls both won at showmanship, and my oldest got grand champ bantam pea comb clean leg. I got grand with my bantam cochin Roo in one show :)

Try Big Sky feeds. There are others I'm sure, but I've had experience with those folks and it's good feed. Pricey though.

Anyone looking for turkey poults? I've got several extra midget whites that are looking for a new farm to call home. Four weeks old, eating game bird starter. Cute, sweet little birds. Could travel up to a couple hours in any direction from the Bitterroot to deliver, I suppose, if someone wants all of them. $15 each.
