This is where living outside of city limits is awesome... I have had anywhere from 12 to 100 birds here over the last 2 years. No one says boo.

My broody FBCM hen is on 7 Silkie eggs... due to hatch this weekend sometime. I'm really hoping some of them hatch! The eggs are all the way from NY. They're from her BBS pen, so we'll see what I get! I've wanted little fluffy headed chicks for a long time, now. Wondering if I should get some more eggs or wait until Spring... Some Lav/Splits caught my eye. Don't know if I'd be able to put them in with the BBS ones, though? And have any hope of lavender chicks... Hm. I need to study up more on the Silkies. They're so interesting :) Any of you have Silkies? I'm trying to get show-quality birds ready for next year's Fair. Buckeyes and Silkies will be my two breeds that I take, I think! The Silkies that I saw this year were all hatchery birds, it seemed. One looked good and was for sale, but he was RUDE! So I don't know what happened there. No Buckeyes were even there =/

In other news, Bullet (my Yak bull) is acting very interested in Yinny (yak cow) and keeps testing/trying to mount... so hopefully she goes into standing heat soon and I'll get at least one calf this winter! I think I'll preg test everyone in October, just for my own sanity.

yaks? How fun! What do you do with yaks? Wish I had land, but alas I have no hubby and raising grand kids in town. I'm blessed to have 10 chickens and am grateful to have the nice coop and run I do have. I spent literally thousands on my coop and runs lol.
I will have to go look at a buckeye, silkies are so cute! But I think my big girls would not play well with them. I have wanted a few different birds, but my girls are large breeds so I'm limited. Pictures, I want picture of them yaks and silkies. And buckeyes! You have an interesting little farm I'm betting lol.

Oh the yaks are for breeding. They're delicious, and they are all-around useful until they turn into steaks :) Meat, Milk, Wool, Ride, Pack, Pull. That's a typical saying. They are good for meat, milking (I don't have any milkers yet), and for fiber. You can train them to ride or carry packs or to do typical oxen work, pulling plows, carts, etc. :)

And alas, I have no live Silkies. My broody killed all 4 that hatched. I just about wrung her neck right there. I'm just... beyond words right now for that hen. She better start laying soon, or she's going into a pot. They were so perfect, too :( I'm sterilizing my incubator now, trying to get more silkie eggs... GAH. Oh well, I'm going to build a nice tractor for any Silkies that I can manage to hatch out...*sigh*

DH came down to the barn to ask me if I was missing a turkey hen. Yep. He found her up by the upper corral with some chicks!
She hatched out 6 chicks.
So excited!

wow yaks are a great animal to hae ! Where are you located? Milk, sounds good, and not that yucky heated homogenized crap right? Lol
Today I got 3 gallons of fresh goat milk, we love fresh milk, and not homogenized etc. !

Sorry bout your Wilkie eggs, I would lend you a broody lol, she is in constant brood, hatched out chicks in the spring and always at it. I can hatch you some silkies, she is heading into broodiness again I do not have silkies not sure my girls would like little birds.
