Montana

Lots of snow here, had to hire a fellow to shovel and salt the place. Bitter cold, below zero tonight and I'm thinking of putting a heat lamp in my coop so the 7 week old girls can stay a bit warmer. I have a tin can heater out there, but I'm thinking the heat lamp will keep the water from freezing, helping also to keep my babies warmer. At least there nice and dry.

It's a balmy 24 degrees outside, and looks like we won't get new snow until tomorrow. Think we'll head in to Famous Dave's for their Veteran's Day free meal for active/retired/vets.

warmer then we are lol, have a great meal hon !

I am looking forward to seeing my girl again, she went to Hawaii and comes home in 2 days. She is my 18 year old and man I am lost with out her. Gearing up to play a video game with my son, then read some. Hpe you are all doing well, I'm feeling so sad for those who lost there homes, and are also out of power. I tell people all the tme, do not depend on the government to help you, have a back up plan ! Even FEMA has closed down due to weather, what a joke. Really, a back up plan, money some where in a bank , a place to go, and a bag filled with your Meds, extra clothing, extra glasses etc. so if you have to leave in a hurry you have things you need. A bag with money, and all essentials. This day and age, there is no one you can depend on but your selves !
Which reminds me to get a few more space bags so I can re pack our bags. Each one of my family members has a bag with clothing, glow sticks, survival gear, food bars, water, and an extra jacket and poncho, this way everyone has what they need until we can get to shelter if need be. I also store extra identification and extra Meds I rotate .
Ok eough about that lol, I was off work a month and am back at it, a nice vacation of rest is what I needed. Starting on shopping now for the holidays, hannauka 8 days of gifts !
I sure snowed a lot here, glad it did, we needed the water!
Have a nice day all, off to play a game !

Oops, that was 6" of snow, not feet, HAHA. I really need new glasses, can't see what I'm typing half the time. It got up to about 20 again today but the wind was very bad, I took the dogs for a walk down to the mail box about a 1/4 mile from the house and the wind kept blowing me backwards and by the time I got home my face and ears felt like they were frozen. Better weather comming next week, back to the 50's, hope it lasts for a while.
My Ameracuana's have started laying again, Yahoo, 2 eggs from them today, the 1st I've gotten from them in months, they are mostly done with their molt now, so I hope to be getting back to full production from them soon. I did tell them yesterday that they were looking very pretty so they better start laying soon or they would be soup. The girls in my layer flock are all also in different stages of molting, but I'm still getting from15-20 eggs a day from them. I have almost every color of egg comming from my layers and my egg customers love the pretty colors they get. I didn't think I would like the olive eggs, but I find them to be very pretty. I also get some that are a super dark red with darker spots, don't know if they come from the Marans or Welsummers, but are very pretty. One of my customers told me she wasn't going to dye eggs for Easter this year because she gets such a pretty natural egg basket. It makes me feel good to get coments like that.
Hope every one has a great week.

Azriel that's great they are starting to lay ! 15/20 eggs a day is great ! I'm still getting 4/5 from my eight adults, a couple are still molting and my maran stopped all together. Ot sure why she is only 7/8 months old. Her eggs were so dark brown / red, I miss them so much. Hoping my little 7 week old EE will lay by March. Stay warm ,bundle up girl when you go for the mail! The ameraucana that are now laying, are they laying blue eggs? I am hoping mine will lay blue eggs this spring, I'm getting green ones from my RIR, americauna mix.

My wheaten/blue wheaten Ameraucana lay a very nice sky blue egg, they are the only ones I have in a breeding pen for pure eggs. I also have some young blue and black Ameraucana in my laying flock and I don't know which of them are laying, but I'm getting 3-4 nice blue eggs from there, as well as mint green but I also have EE and olive eggers in the laying flock. I getting one very dark blue egg, not a normal Ameraucana color, its like a blue jean color, not a washed out blue jean, but like a dark new pair of jeans. I wish I knew who was laying that one, and what cross she is, I would like to try to breed more that would have that color egg.

Welcome Tazman. What part of Montana are you in? What chickens do you have? Tell us about yourself. On another subject , we had a visit from a big black bear last week. Got 7 of our chickens, darn it. Called and left a couple of messages for the "bear specialist" and no return calls. Guess they don't care. It has been raining here, but every little bit of snow has quickly melted off. So far everybody warm and cozy and starting to lay.

Azriel I posted a thread about my EE and sex, maybe you could take a look. I have a beautiful male and I'm going to have to rehome, but take a look at the girl, tell me if you think she will be a blue egger. I'm so hoping. How far are you from Butte? I could use sme fertile eggs early spring!

sorry bout the poor chickens, maybe it's time to go bear hunting. Can you use a nice bear skin rug? Lol, out of 8 girls we are getting five eggs , 2 are still molting and my maran of only 7 months decided to stop laying a few months ago. I'm so glad, mom dad love my eggs as does my 36 year old son so it's hard to keep up with them and my own house hold. Come spring I'm sending several to market and refilling my coop with 4 more pullets. Hoping to find some 4 month olds by April!

Wishing all the Montana folk a very Happy Thanksgiving. , !

We are hoping to find a nice goose or duck for Christmas, yummmmm !
