I learned a lot about being able to tell the difference between the pullets & roos last year with the 15 chicks I special ordered thanks to help on this site. All 15 were pullets, even though I had wanted a roo in the mix, & I drove over an hour to buy 2 roos & another pullet. This year I had originally bought 3 pullets to not only replace one hen that mysteriously died over the winter (I think the cold winter & molt took too much out of her, she was never right since she had sour crop a few months before her death), but also increase my number of hens for the 2 roos (even though they're not fighting, I figured the guys would be happier with more women to share!). Needless to say, the store where I work had other dark brahmas that hadn't been bought yet & needed to go, so I ended up with a total of 9 chicks this year. When they first started molting I thought for sure they were all pullets due to everyone had penciling on their feathers (made me happy, because this year I don't want any more roos!) ..... but this single one is now making me question my original thoughts. Not only does it have penciling, but it also has some pure black & a little bit of white. I know that in a month I'll know for sure .... but my curiosity makes me want to know now. :)

See I changed mine! I to used to have a flock of dark brahmas and so far it looks likes a cockerel. I'm sure your questioning the feathers above the wing. As you know brahmas take a little bit to determine but once adult feathers come in it's pretty easy.

That's what I was thinking! :-( Don't really need ANOTHER boy! Go figure. The year I buy 15 in hopes of getting one boy, I get all girls so I buy 2 boys. This year I only get 9, want ONLY girls, & end up with one being a boy! Thinking 3 roos for 23 hens is a little much. I've lucked out & the 2 roosters I have now don't fight at all ..... Peter's dominate, & Popeye accepts that ..... I don't want to ruin that.
