DC,
I am also, disabled, having my left leg amputated. I didn't know about your mum so I apologize if I had given any offense. I only mention the cardboard method as a no-dig,no till method of gardening. Personally, I eat the purslane. Purslane contains a high dose of Vitamin C and trace minerals; it also has a nice tart taste that goes nicely in a fresh salad or as a side for fish.

carugoman,

I ate some purslane today ....I have read such good things about it over the years....it started growing in one section of garden....so I let it stay....and I must say...it was very yummy.....great favor and texture....and with the vitamin C ....all the better!

I too am disabled ....sound like you are not stopped and nor am I....blackberries are growing behind my wooden fence in the woods edge....I am going over the wall sometime in the morning....If my husband knew he would flip....I will make a pie and then tell him;)

Purslane...as in portulaca?? I have some of that in my garden. I didn't know it was edible...didn't know it was the same thing. Former city girl here..have mercy

purslane is not the same as a moss rose i.e. the garden variety of portulaca! It's like saying since eggplants are edible, therefore nightshade is edible too! If you try it...you're dead...and quickly.

Wow guys! I have been reading and reading and reading! I feel smart just reading this thread. i have something cool to share...In my area of SoCal, there has been a problem with salmonella in the retuaraunt tomato supply. So I have my own backyard tomato plants to eat from. Aren't you all so excited?! My yard looks shrinky tiny compared to your property. by the way, my husband drinks FAT TIRE beer, anyone heard of that one?

This salmonella "crisis" has nothing to do with tomatoes in California, but maybe some sensationalism by some zealot journalist that wants to make a 'name' for themselves. The so-called outbreak scare happened back in March, in New York and in Massachusetts, with imported tomatoes that have been traced to a shipment that came from Mexico.

My brother, the avid cyclist, loves FAT TIRE. It is as if by drinking it, he is somehow supporting bicycling. He's one silly vegan!

mainchick, great you have your own tomato plants! Are you a cherry tomato, a grape tomato, a roma tomato, or a beefsteak tomato? I believe I am mostly cherry.

I think the future of the US food industry, as long as problems like these continue, will have to either change how it conducts business, or suffer the loss of folks willing to start growing their own.

I have never tried Miner's Lettuce. Isn't that Winter Purslane?

thanks guys! I had looked it up, when it was first mentioned, and I think one of the names used for it was portulaca (Latin?) So that's why I thought that it was the regular portulaca. I am knew to all of this....thanks for clearing it up for me.
