Moral delemma...wanting cake and eating it too..

Well, snuck down last night, and as soon as she heard them peeping, her demeanor changed, interested and alert. I tucked them under her and it got quiet.

This morning, I went down early to let the layers out, give everyone a bit more room, and there is a chick with his head peaking out, cozy and warm and happy.

At noon, went down to check, and she has them all down out of the nest, (about a 1 foot drop to a platform, and a two foot drop to the floor) and out into the run, just outside the pop up door.

I took down some food and water, and put it near her, and chased off the layers. Everything looks mighty fine.

Now how to make -2 + 5 = a balanced flock? and NO coons, I don't need help. Fall is coming.

I love all the aspects of this hobby, but this is one of the sweetest parts! A hen with chicks.

Awwww, sounds like she is a great mama! Enjoy your new chicks :)

We have had rain, and rain and the mosquitoes are terrible, so much that it has really limited my time outside. But new chicks are a powerful draw. Yesterday while I was watching her, I was looking around the run, and I found a dead baby chick. At first I thought it was one of the new ones that I bought, but I counted and they are all there.

So this must have been a chick that hatched and left the nest. She must have hatched before the date I had down on the calendar. The hen now is a powerful mother, not quite sure what happened. But it does give me more confidence in my candling skills.
