HI all,

Well, more eggs are in the nest. Now I have at least 14 that I can tell. It's almost like the other hens get in there an lay when she gets up. Problem is, now I don't know which hen is broody! What do I do? Isolate her when I see her in there first thing in the morning? Is it her??

Is no one sitting on them at night? if someone is then go out right at day light and who ever is on the nest is probably the one going to brood. but you have to get out there at first light.

I had the same thing happen. Eventually two ducks started sitting next to each other and split the eggs between them. They are due to hatch tomorrow, don't know if they will continue to co parent or not.

I thought I did post this on the broody thread?? lol....i'm so confused!

One of them is on it at first light. I can see her in there. So, she is the one I need to separate from the others....that makes sense. Yes, there are 23 eggs as of this morning. I am going to have to pull #2 and #3 egg now, as they are the oldest. I already pulled #1.

If this is a first time mama I would let her hatch near that many I'd keep it under 8 you want to be sure she can handle them all and keep them warm, How is she acting other wise a duck beginning to brood is very vocal, she'll scream if anyone looks at her or even if they don't and fluffs her feathers out walks with her head down and just basically is in a fowl mood. excuse the pun. if your not seeing any of this it may take a little more time, when you finally see one sitting up into the day then you know she is committed. and and of course the broody poop you can't miss that. After one finally commits then when she comes off the nest to eat etc. go in and remove all the oldest eggs down to a number your happy with . then you just wait till hatch day, make sure she has water for bathing [that's how they keep the humidity where it should be during brooding] I hope the one you saw this morning is her but you have to see symptoms too.

I just said to her yesterday....you horny woman! Be quiet and he'll leave you alone! I said you don't need more babies! hahhahahahahahah!! I am so underexperienced!

So, now that I can see the signs of brooding....I will for sure keep her separated with the nest. I think i'm just going to build a little chicken wire coop around her and leave plenty of room for her to bath and eat. So, you think I should take some of the eggs? I get that. Yesterday, they were all back in a circle. End to end....in a circle. This morning, all in a make shift pile again. I have the earlier ones numbered but just last week and over the weekend we grew 3 eggs a day! One was all bent up and dented...so I took that one. I candled it, didn't see any veins but it could have been laid that day for all I know. I will do as suggested for sure. Yes, they are all first time mama's. Does a broody hen continue to lay eggs? Or will she stop? I would imagine she will stop, right?

They stop when they feel they have enough they want to sit, it could be 4-25. best thing to do would be to pen her up like you said then check her nest to see if anymore are laid. Then you'll know if she is through .I have 2 wannabe broody's they are still laying but have all the symptoms of a full out broody but I keep taking their eggs so they keep laying. eventually they will lay out this cycle and hopefully get over it till they start up again.

Yay for real out an out broody Now the waiting begins. when you see her sitting for 24 hrs straight except for fast out to eat and bath and of course poop then start counting your days.
