More found dog saga **Updated post 45 and 57**

I would find myself driving down their street every few hours! And waiting for the dog to escape again!
We were in charge of watching my daughters min rat terrier. I was sure she hated living with us as she would run away at any opportunity. Last time I put up some flyers...some people called with kids, said they found her, they loved her but she ran away from them!
So maybe your lost Molly will run away again.
There is more to loving a dog than doing the "right" things, ie fence/microchip. It would sort of be like if your mom fed you, made you put on seat belts, but called you a lazy A*S or ignored you your whole life. Yea, you were taken care of but were you really?
I had a cat once...not sure why as I don't like cats. I was young too and was not interested in it. Some people in my complex said they were feeding her can food (
i fed dry) and she liked it better..I was offended like my food was not good enough.Finally they just said, look, she likes it here more, can we keep her? I was like, yea...and she loved living with them more than me.
I suggested to one of my pals that she should get her dog microchipped and she just about flipped out on me and told me no, that , that is a sign of the End Times. I don't follow that so have no clue ( a little) what she means, but thought it was a bit extreme reaction~
In summary...wait for dog to run away again, have her favorite treats on your front porch!
Don't return her.
Keep her inside.
They will get a new dog that will be fun while it is a puppy and then it will start running away.
Do scan for chip cause you might find my dog whom I would be devastated if I lost. Even some of the best pet owners have their dogs run out from under their long skirt and not know! Happened to me!

Thanks for the support. The MAJOR reason I wouldn't scan for a chip is this; you take a dog somewhere to get it scanned and they are obligated to call the owner.

You can't say, "Oh, only call the owner if they live far away" It just doesn't work like that.

If I find another stray dog (and I suspect I will someday), I will ALWAYS post an ad in multiple places, including on the internet, in the newspaper and at the humane society. I will stop at every lost dog poster I find, as well as check the newspaper religiously. I just probably won't scan for a microchip.

Luckily, I drive right by her house twice a day... perfect time to check if she's out and about!!

As hard as it was, you did the right thing. I also would be driving past the house to make sure she is ok. Also if she came back to my house or my neighborhood I would keep her, because that would mean that she had made the decision that she would rather be with me than them and I would honor her decision. I would not tell the original owners she came back. If the kids cared as much as the man told you they would of been looking for her all over and act more excited that she was home.

and I know your heart must be breaking at the thought of her being somewhere she is obviously not so well loved. they may take good care of her but if they loved her they wouldnt be so none caring when she went missing for days and would also take the time to train her correctly as you did.

I understand how you feel upset about losing this dog and upset about taking her to be scanned, but I wish it didn't make you decide not to have a dog scanned again. Both my dogs are chipped and I hope like heck that if they ever get out without their collars, that whoever finds them gets them scanned. We would be devestated without our dogs and I know lots of other people feel the same. The next time may not be like this one, perhaps next time the dog would belong to a wonderful family who are loving and care deeply about their dog.

I worked at a shelter and just because the info was on a microchip doesnt mean the owner came and got the dog.. many people dont update their microchip or they gave the dog away and the new owner didnt change it so it doesnt automatically mean you will have to give the dog away just because you had it scanned.
On another note.. if you didnt have the dog scanned , if she ever got lost from you.. she would go back to the other owner anyway and it may be after you've had her even longer and are more attached. Do the right thing and get the dog scanned right away.. before you get attached.

I'm sorry it didn't turn out the way you where hoping it would. Unfortunately it is there dog. Hopefully they will change their mind and let you have it. Two years ago we weemd to be the lost dog hangout. I would take them to the vet to be scanned but none where microchipped. I did find homes for them all though. I have enough of my own, and dn't need another mouth to feed but I will be kind and take care of them until a home is found. If all else fails I will take them and sit in the Walmart parking lot and wait for a family to fall in love with it. That method has yet to fail. There is somebody out there for every animal. Just takes time to find the right one.

My chihuahua mix was dognapped once. And by a neighbor too. I was devasted. I worried aobut her all night. We walked the street, looked in the field and weeds and up and dow the tracks. Calling for her the entire time. I now I heard her bark several times but couldn't tell where she is. WE even knocked on a couple of doors of the ones we suspected took her, and nothing. I knew when she was let out or could get out a door she would come home and sure enough. First thing in the morning she was at our door. She had had a bath, she smelled like soap. I knew somebody dognapped her and they where close too. Everybody here knows our dogs.

After that I would walk around in the yard carrying her watching everybody to see if they acted guilty.

Wow this was a very interesting story. I wish more people valued their dogs. Around here people let little dogs run free (some are very mangy looking) and no one seems to care. We would have adopted some of these dogs, but we have 6 of our own and the dogs do all go home at night. No one seems to care about little dogs. However if you find a large dog, its taken home within a few hours. I find this highly suspicious. All dogs should be loved equally.
