More problems....post #19

Thanks Cetawin.
I have looked at all the info you posted before. None of that sounds like what happened here with mine. I will try and find the unmedicated chick starter. That is the reason they are on layer mesh because I couldn't find it. My local feed and seed doesn't carry it and the last time I checked neither did TSC.

I'm so sorry.

You can use medicated chick starter as long as the only medication in it is Amprolium. I've raised call ducklings on medicated chick starter for quite a few years now.

I didn't know you could. Everywhere I have read say's do not use it.

That belief is a hold over from years ago from when they used other medications in the feed. Amprolium is a cocci preventative that keeps the chicks/ducklings from getting cocci while their natural immunity is developing. Ducklings can and will get cocci and die quickly from it just like chicks do. Years ago when I got my first calls a person who's been breeding them for years and years recommended to use it. That's the only thing she uses for hers. I use medicated Purina Start & Grow.

I'm so sorry. They seem a little old to get hypoglycemic but that is really what it sounds like to me. The sitting back and shaking both really suggest that to me.

When we used to raise baby ducks we always had some rice cereal (for human babies) handy to help get their blood sugar up (along with sugar water). It's been a while since I raised babies so this may be outdated information. There was no internet when I had ducklings before so we were much more on our own.

I would make sure that they are eating very regularly. I'm so sorry this happened to you, baby ducks are so sweet!

Yeah I am trying to find that stuff close before the ducklings get here but so far it has other medication in it and I am not risking it. so, my babies will not hatch till Late April early May so I am on the search for the good food.

Ok..... so I got another problem. I have Khaki cambells in a different brooder. They were hatched on 3-9. I have already lost one, and now I have nother one doing the same thing. They have all been fine eating and drinking and pooping....then the next thing I know they are gasping. They just stand there and there mouth opens and close's with every breath. The last one did this for a full day and then I lost him the next. Any ideas? This is my first time with ducks and I have no idea what it could be.

OMG! this is getting bad! i'm so sorry!

are you wetting their feed...making a mash with it? or are they eating it dry?
