Morel Maddness!!!! Morel hunters check in here!

We have always said dogwood petals as big as a mouse's ear. It is the best indicator that I use. Then you have a 2 to 3 week window. Under sycamores and under apple trees can be good places as well as old roadbeds. Creek banks can be great places. Unbelievably, our limestone graveled drive is where we always find some. We have 75 acres close to Kentucky Lake, with a creek, and in 15 years have only found 5! Here in the heart of Knoxville, we had 30 last year on our 3 acres. Go figure.

Well it's just starting here for us! We went out this morning in the rain and found what we were looking for. We only found 4 but the largest one was around 7 in tall and wider than a pop cans center. Fresh as can be. Pictures will be posted later. This is what usually happens is the little ones come up then the gigantors come up.

I think I'm going to go out and look today - we have 5 acres, all wooded. Part of it is a pine forest and we have tons of poplars. I'll report back later!

We always try to find them Mothers' Day weekend in Northern WI. Have not found any yet though...we look while we are horseback riding. This year I will remember my books...there are so many that I still cant identify by memory! Terri O

This was the worst year I've had in 12 years looking for morels, the season kicked in 2 weeks early I found the first balck on April 5th the yellows were kicking in by april 11th and my grey areas real never turned on last year I picked about 15 lbs by now. May first I took a group of 21 out on a hunt everyone found something but the Pickings were slim as this was neutral territory lots of elms and cherry. A very strange season...............we'll all try to figure it out over at Morels.com on the Pennsylvania site........ MM

Our season has been done for about 2 weeks now, but it was a good one. A friend found 13 lbs in one day. Everyone I talked to had good luck and found lots of them. They were overall larger this year with many in the pop can size.

Yeah It turned out to be a bad year for us. The worst that my father has seen in a very long time. I thought it was just starting with the big ones but nother else was found... I totally forgot about this thread!
Here's the pictures of all we found this year.

I LOVE morels! My favorite way to cook them is to sauté them in LOTS of butter, and when the butter turns clear, I toss them in some halfway-done scrambled eggs (fresh eggs, of course!)
