This morning, as soon as the sun came up my birds all started screaming like little girls. We went outside to check things out and the only thing different was the place that one of the birds decided to sleep for the night. Is this normal or was there something in the coop that got out before we could check things out. We do have hardwire that is protecting them, but we do have rats around so it's feeseable that one was in there, but one of the birds was sleeping in the opening that goes between the coop and the run (she was the one sleeping in a weird spot) so I think it would have been difficult for the rat to get by I dunno. Maybe they all woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

Weird. Mine did that this morning, too. They're all over a year old and they've never done it before. It was about 5:30 a.m. and the sun wasn't up yet. They didn't sound panicked, just really loud. I had the window open and they woke me up. When I went out (with my husband and the flashlight) they were all up..out of the coop and in the run...making a real racket. But everything seemed fine around the coop and inside. We decided to let them out and they settled right down. Very strange. I hope this isn't the beginning of a new trend.

Hummm... where do you live? I can't tell. I am in the Bay Area (Cali). It was about the same time just as the sun was peaking over the hills, maybe because of the sun peeking through the fog shining directly through their windows on them...??? It was a little eerie the lighting this morning, but would that freak them out. I know they have amazing eyesight.

I can't wait to hear more.......

All it takes at my house to cause chicken panic is for one of my dogs to bark, causes the others to bark, causes the chickens to respond, causes the five roosters to go berserk, which causes the dogs to bark more. Good thing I have no close neighbors.

I'm in central Virginia. We have a light in the coop that is on a timer. I'm thinking about turning it off tonight so it'll stay dark out there a little longer. Fortunately our neighbors aren't too close and so far no one else has mentioned hearing the noise, but it was very loud and definitely out of the ordinary for them. I'll let you know how it goes with no light. I suppose it could have been a predator lurking nearby, but they really didn't seem spooked...more like extremely annoyed. Stay tuned and I will too.

eastbaychicks, do you think there could of been an earthquake??? I was born and raised a couple of hours from there and my mom has a parrot, who with out a doubt is screaming before any earthquake. She woke me up a couple of times before an earthquake and then they would come. Maybe it was just a really mild one that you could not really feel..... just a thought...

Just checked. There were two small 2.5 mag earthquakes about 100 miles north. One was before all the screaming and the other was after. We've been having a lot of rain and the soil the coop is built on is clay, which expands and contracts a lot, so that may be moving and they felt that. A small local earthquake maybe.

my roosters threw a fit this morning too....

granted, donkey was trying to pull the tub that has the sweet feed out from under the porch.....
i told her next time she needs to offer the roos a percentage to ensure their silence....

Mine was throwing a fit this morning also about 5:50 a.m. local time. I just thought they where telling me to get my rear end out there and let them out.
