Hi folks, first I want to say how much I appreciate this site.
Yesterday, I noticed that lila was sitting down a lot, and though she could walk it seemed that she was weak until she got going, she and her mate spend the nights in a enclosed (1/4in wire mesh) run which is attached to a large high ceiling dog house, they are quite social and so we walk together daily to a considerable sized lake fed pond, in and around the pond is where they forage and splash and enjoy the day. we had a dangerously dry summer and the pond did get very low, but I was not aware of any stagnate smell. They also have fresh water daily in their enclosure. They eat a certified organic 17% protein mash, along with organic peas, mixed greens and some tofu as a treat.
Their bedding is changed anywhere from every 3 days to 6 days depending on how long they are outside and whether it has rained etc to dampen the hay.
I have worked with ducks in triage etc as a volunteer, but this is the first time that I have lived with some. They have been here for almost 2 yrs, other than Ronnie arriving with foamy eye, they have been vital and strong...... I have brought lila inside, she spent some time in luke warm water in bathtub and is now resting in a dog crate in bathroom, she's eating drinking and preening/cleaning. There seems to be something off in the positioning of one of her claws, but no redness or inflammation or heat......geez my apologies for the long post, i'm want to provide as much info as possible. THANKS!

Are you putting brewers yeast on their food? They can get leg issues without it.
Abriana thanks! No, I didn't know about that, i can't pick up brewers yeast tdy, but I do have nutritional yeast, can I use that? at least for a couple of days? if so I will start right away.

Abriana, I did just look into nutritional yeast, seems ok, so lila has just eaten a bit of mashed with a little mashed tofu as incentive and a tsp of yeast......she's about 5 lbs....how much do you suggest daily? i'll keep her inside for the rest of tdy, with another tepid bath time....I am so relieved to have some guidance, thanks again

At over 2 years old, I don't think it would be Niacin deficiency... it would have presented much earlier, I think...

Do you have pics or video?

If the pond water wasn't stagnant, could there have been any little stagnant puddles? Anything toxic she could have eaten? Botulism can cause balance issues...

Have you ever dewormed them?

@casportpony anything else you can think of?

hi, no they have never been de-wormed, (drake is almost 7yrs, though he has been with us for only the past 2) yes maybe stagnant areas since the dry summer saw marsh and ground water levels vey low......so using what was available, lila has started on a small dose of pro biotic, I did add a little nutritional yeast to her food, and will add maybe just a sprinkle to their food daily? Best de-worming advice? Would I see any evidence of worms in their poop?

Nutritional yeast wouldn't hurt sprinkled in the food, just not sure it is what will help her...

If it is a toxin/botulism, best to do a flush for her...

That post has 3 different types of flushes...

For deworming, if you can get a fecal float done on poop sample would be best, most worms are not visible except large roundworms...
If not, a good broad spectrum dewormer is a good idea... Safeguard (fenbendzole 10%) or Valbazen (albendazole 11.6%) are good broad spectrum dewormers, if you have those available... where are you located? Country/area helps figure out available options for you...

Thank you, I will be able to get to town for de-wormer next week, we are on a small island near Vancouver Island BC Canada. Lila seems to be stronger for sure, but still slow when walking, but she is able to transfer from sitting position to standing much more easily, she add an additional tepid bathwater swim and splash, she is now back outside in their enclosure, pond is still very low, so as a precaution i'm thinking it might be good to keep them away from the pond until the level rises and colder weather is around for a while. I'm wondering if Ron (drake) might have injured her back or something, though there seems no evidence of it or mating, he is still just regaining his feathers from Autumn molt. i'm adding a sprinkle of nutritional yeast, some probiotic to the water, and upped the amount of fresh greens to their mash....... will check out the "flush " info right now, so helpful thanks!
