Most asked for chicken

There was a poll on the Aussie chicken site some months ago and Silkies were the most popular.
I get lots of queries and have names to phone when we have some more for sale.
Getting a BATOR!!!! then ill have many more.

We raise & sell chickens, and here the most popular are the RIR.
Although, most don't the difference between a RIR and any other red chicken. They are familiar with the name, and that is what they ask for.
Some are surprised at what they look like. So, any Red chicken sells great.

Next is Ameraucana and EE. I can never raise enough of these.

The next is Dominique, but some think any barred chicken is a Dom.

Then comes the Buff Orpington, (my personal favorite). I would be able to sell more of these, but I have a very small flock of breeders. Maybe this Spring, I will just order 100 pullets, and keep some for myself!

I have Delaware's that have recently started laying, so when those chicks get bigger, I'll see how they sell.

Just a story about what I was told not too long ago.
I had a man tell me he had Delaware's, and then he looked at my Barred Rocks and said just like those Delaware's!! So now he knows he has Barred Rocks. He thought he had bought Delaware chickens. He sure was surprised when I showed him mine!

I'm sure everyone has different best sellers in different areas. Here, city people are moving into the country alot now and wanting fresh eggs. They know the names of the old breeds, and I guess they don't want anyone to know that they don't really know much about chickens. I don't understand that, so I offer " what the chickens are used to being fed and how they are housed at my place" information as to not step on anyone's ego and still educate them as to the care of the chickens.
Although DH did have a man ask how much 5 of my "Dom pullets" were. He explained that they were young Barred Rock roosters, and the man got hateful..saying he knew what he was talking about & those were Dom pullets! DH sold him his pullets, and I'm sure he was very surprised when every one of those BR roosters started crowing!!! I think he will be too ashamed to come back, but DH tried to tell him.

Anyway, I'm rambling....

When people come to see our flock, the hands-down most popular girl is our Barred Rock. People recognize the breed and even chicken-neophytes fall in love with her right away.

Personally I think the EE, SLW and Australorp are prettier and cooler-looking, but everyone's drawn to the BR for some reason! And she IS a sweetie....

I am reading this thread with interest, as I am thinking about raising up birds for the locals. I hear a lot of talk about RIR, Buff Orps, Barred Rocks and Australorps in my area. Though I don't think most people would know the difference between RIR, New Hampshires or a red sex-link, I know they don't know the difference between BR and Doms (Neekers as they say around here!) and Australorps could be any black chicken. The color of Buff Orps kind of makes them hard to mistake, but Buff Rocks or any other Buff colored bird would work.

Now, that is NOT to say I wouldn't be honest! I am just saying that people think they know what they are talking about, but often don't know as much as they think. Especially if they don't spend a lot of time on the internet looking at pics of birds like we do! LOL!! We get spoiled because we get to look at so many beautiful breeds, while most people only know about the standards.

And, unless you are going to show - whatever makes you happy, right? If you like RIR's, you think, but you decide that a red sexlink would work just fine, then that is the best thing to do. And as breeders, we could educate people in the differences in breeds, and help them make the right decision for them.

JMHO,

Actually the favorite breed comes and goes and doesn't remain the favorite forever. For instance back in the late 1800's the black java was the most popular breed in America and is now on the critical list of breeds. Since then the favorite breed has changed literally countless times, and will continue to do so. Easter eggers are one of the most popular at the present time, although not the only most popular one at the present time.

If your question is among chicken people I would say Silke or Bantam of some sort, that is what most that show, show

If asking the general public:
I think if you took a pole, MOST people think chickens are WHITE (leghorns) Thank you Purdue/mountainaire etc.....

MOST people have no clue that a Silke is even a chicken

Old timers probably would say RIR or Barred Rocks
