Hey guys! We have recently been toying with the idea of starting a side started pullet business. I'm not trying to get rich or anything, we just don't have anywhere in our immediate area. When we started keeping chickens, I didn't want to start with chicks and we had to drive a very VERY good ways to find a facility I was comfortable using. What are your opions on breeds to start with? I have several breeds myself just because I appreciate the diversity, and i love traits of all of them. But I cannot keep 20 batches of different pullets all at the same time just because thats what I like lol.

Personally, Chanteclers are my favourite, but I would recommend either Leghorns or Plymouth Rocks to someone just starting out with chickens (depending on whether DP or laying birds were desired) so that's what I voted for.

I started with ISA Browns from Tractor Supply. Four of the original six are still with me in their fourth year, and there haven't been many problems with them. Plus, they're pretty and friendly.

I actually wanted to add a couple to my own flock this year! I just wasn’t sure if they we’re easily identifiable to most people. I’m kind of torn because we do have two tractor supplies in our area that are very close and they keep the really basic breeds during chick days. But when I started out those are some of the breeds that I really wanted personally, I just didn’t want to start with baby chicks being a first timer you know?

I think it reaaaally depends on your area, and what demands the market might have there. If you're not sure, think of what breeds would do the best in your climate, and what folks in your area might prioritize (backyard pets? higher production birds? ornamental birds?)
We actually have all of these birds in our home flock with the exception of the Barnevelder. They’ve done really well through our super hot summers and our up and down winters. I would think that in our area it’s semi-rural Because we have such a difference in areas within just the county were in. So I would think more backyard flock pets.

I personally prefer barred rocks, but in my area Rhode Island Red, Speckled Sussex, and Jersey Giants are more popular.
