Most docile breed

My Jersey Giant and Welsummer are the sweetest of my bunch. My Jersey girl was a great layer, though she started really late (7 or 8 months, as it was winter when she came of age). Her eggs weren't very big, compared to her size though.

My Welsummer is still young, so I don't know how she will do with productivity. Super loving bird, but pretty dippy. Not my smartest gal.

I have 2 Barred Rocks are also incredibly friendly (they jump on my lap, or into my arms) and they lay huge eggs, and very reliably.

The Leghorns are my least docile hens, and they are always getting into mischief. Egg laying machines though.

All of my hens were raised in our only bathroom -- so they got a lot of interaction. It's cute when they're little, and then gets disgusting. Fast.

Just proves what @aart was saying that it can very much depend on the individual bird, among other things.

In the book Storey's Guilde to Raising Chickens, there is an excellent breed comparison section that outlines many of the main factors people look at when selecting birds and compares breed based on these factors. Off the top of my head I believe it had heat tolerance, cold tolerance, how well they bear confinement, whether they are friendly to people and/or other chickens, whether they are flighty, egg production averages, meat production, whether they are typically broody. Definitely worth a read on many topics.

i have new hampshire reds very friendly to me, between 5 of them i get 3-5 eggs a day, they can be a bit pushy for attention, a few of them like to crowd me and want me to pet them every day when i do my " chicken chores" the others don't like being pet or picked up but are not aggressive at all if i can catch them to pick up they tolerate it and if i manage to pet one of those they just run away never snapping. they can be a little harsh when one forgets its rank in the pecking order but its usually just a quick hard peck and if the other backs down there all good again. but they do love to talk especially when I'm slow with the morning treats lol

It's tough to say, it really can depend on the individual bird. My Jersey Giants are super docile but not the best layers. My Orpingtons are fairly docile now but only since they started laying, also one has already gone broody and they aren't even a year old yet. My Black Australorps are also docile and seem to be pretty decent layers so far. So my vote would go for a Black Australorp!
My Australorps are a delight, very vocal while laying though, lol....got the neighbors attention....wondering if I was killing them, ugh....get 5-6 eggs per week from my new layers!!

Wow, never thought i'd ever hear of a docile delaware. Iv'e got one single hen and she's the devil. Lays huge eggs but mean as a snake.:)
Yes, delawares are aggressive but really have an excellent disposition with humans. They are my best lap birds along with the Red Sex Link. The only reason I wouldn't recommend both of these breeds to the OP is because they are both bullies with other chickens, including the australorps.

Lol! Must be one of those individual bird things, she dosen't like the other hens or me. Iv'e actually heard her hiss like a goose when iv'e had to handle her.:)

Buff Orpingtons are docile, friendly and not bossy at all. The only chickens breeds I have ever experienced aggression problems with were my australorp, Red Sex Link, Delaware and Black Copper Marans, these breeds I also had a problem integrating new chickens with. Barred Rocks, White Rocks, Easter Eggers, Buff Orpingtons, are great when introducing new chickens into the flock. I also agree with @aart that the most docile chickens in your flock can turn out to be bullies.

My black Australorp are extremely docile.... they don’t see to have care care in the world. My sex links both red and black are my meanest birds. I have one ee whose a lap chicken but my other 2 don’t want anything to do with humans. The polish are very sweet but very flighty. One splash polish loves to sit on my head or arm whenever I’m in there doing chores. But I one have a blue polish that I’ve never been able to touch because she so scared of everything. I do believe breed does play a role but its mostly the individual that determines the behavior.
