I breed showbirds, so they're a little more expensive than layers, but here goes (I'm going to try and average it out)

My coop cost around $700 to build, then I built a few small coops on the side, there's another $200.

My original birds all cost me $100+ each x 13 = $1300

Feed costs about $80 a month x 12 months x 7 years = $6720

Shavings are $20 per month x 12 months x 7 years = $1680

Replacement of cracked waterers, etc around $30 per year x 7 years = $210

Show entries, which are around $40 each x about 9 shows a year x 6 years = $2160

Supplies for each show $10 x 9 shows a year x 6 years = $540

Misc supplies (meds, bands, etc) about $75 a year x 7 years = $525

Total of about $14,035 and I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff...not even going to try and calculate all the gas I've gone through for these birds

The most I've spent on purchasing a single bird was $250 + $50 in shipping.

Here's a pic of her, she filled out much more than in this pic and became a stunning bird that produced excellent babies.

They're not cheap!

Right after I bought my house here in Vermont, DISH network insisted to come out to see about installing a dish. I had told them no initially because I am on the north side of a mountain and knew satellite signal would be blocked. They insisted so OK, I took a day off work.

The techs arrive and one of them was in the house with me while the other was outside getting equipment out of the truck. He let a dog out, one of those rabid aussie things. It was mid January and there was two feet of snow on the ground. First the dog tore after my cats then ran past its owner and ran straight to the chicken coop. There was no fencing yet as I had just moved in and the ground was frozen.

The dog ran into the coop and started tearing after the birds. My old rooster fought the dog and was bitten. The dog ran out and then ran down the road. If I had a rifle near by I would have shot the thing right then and there. The tech could not control the dog.

So it took three days to find a vet to see a chicken. The rest laughed at me, 'we don't do farm animals'.

So $60 at the vet and 3 hard months of treatment with a total of 6 months for him to recover. My layers shut down and I lost a ton of egg customers.

I sued DISH in small claims court and won $500 for the rooster. And no, no signal reception out here. Idiots.

ok heres my lil christmas story...drove down to shelton CT fron new britain about 45 mins..for a silver duckwing...on the way there my car had a flat...didnt have a spare so it had to get towed to the nearest station...that came out to 120..then the tire wasnt available there so they sent for it somewhere else..i believe it was town fair tire that came out to be 95 for one tire...yeah i said....ok so then im driving back to new britain....oh i payed 5 dollars for the roo..on the way back. near the chesire and 691 exit i crashed and my mini van was totalled....yep pretty expensive....all for one silver duckwing..

I bought a New Jersey Giant from this lady from guess what....
New Jersey. Paid 7 bucks for the bird and 28 bucks in shipping.

I bought the bird becuase it was suppose to be a roo with a pair of stunning parents.

It is a hen. she does not lay, she does not care and what is worse..... she is big and eats a whole lot !! Even the big Ol' aggressive Polish roos do not touch her. She beat the snot out of one of them not too far back.

Yeah, I agree about the dog...I hate that, but have seen it often. We have a lot of construction going on around here, and every once in a while some contractor deliberately lets his dog run free while he's working (until someone tells him to leash the dog). Like we all by default love to have someone else's dog barking, peeing and pooping, and chasing everything and everyone around our neighborhood. WT$%^&?! Luckily my chickens are in my walled backyard, or they'd be shredded by now. Cat's not so lucky, but at least she's faster than the dogs so she's survived anyway. I'm glad you went to court too.​
