I would say that Cochins, Bantam Game, Silkies or D'Uccles to me seem to be the freindliest as we have aroud 400 chickens Mostly chicks . My kids own Silkies, D'Uccles , Cochins and a few others but We handle most of ours every day. It also depends on the indivial bird. I have a bantam game and a serama who will stop eating if we don't spend time with them every day.

At the age of your children I would go with a small bird like the Modern Game Bantam.

I have RIR's, Silkies, Sebrights and Golden Comets. They all either do well or run away

One of our Golden Comets actually flys up into the kids playhouse with them and hangs out!
My daughter is 9 and my son is 5.
The only roosters I have are Silkies, and we have no problems.

There was a time I would have said Cochins hands down but this year we got some Light Sussex and they are even more calm and laid back (if that is possible). They are huge and just as laid back as can be.
