We LOVE our Easter Eggers. They're pretty AND so friendly. If they don't have a roo over them, they will be more inclined to submit to their humans (any breed). I've tried EEs, brahmas, black australorps, barred rocks, black sex-links, and golden laced wyandottes so far. EE's are my favorites!

I would have to say Orpingtons. I have limited experience with chickens in general but i have 3 buff Orps and they are *very* docile and non-threatening.
Edited to add that the buffs handle my two year old son really well.
My son has bantam cochins and they are very sweet and so soft. Plus they have a tiny little voice. He is always carrying them around. They are very gentle and don't make a lot of sudden moves which is nice with kids.
Bantams will be so much easier to handle for small kids. 3 silkies here that are very timid and relaxed compared to EEs, BR, Cochin, Brahma or RI hybrids.
Get them as chicks if possible to they can bond from early age.
Banty Size Salmon Faverolles. Very cute with their muffs and beards, small size for small hands, I have a full size Salmon Faverolles 5 month old that loves to climb on to my lap or climb on to my shoulder like a parrot. I'm sure the little banties would be especially cute.
