Along the same lines I was going to generalize and say a popular breed in a rare color... Wyandottes other than silver or gold laced, Orpingtons that aren't buff.

I feel like silkies and polish are popular in backyard flocks but not popular for production purposes.

Breeds that your local feed store does not carry are breeds that people will seek out from a breeder (you).

My husband is coming around to my chicken hobby and just this morning suggested I could start breeding and selling my chickens next summer to make some cash, but I told him I'm not going to make a dime on selling "barnyard mix" chicks at $2 a piece (though it certainly would be fun and it's good to know he won't be mad when I bring home a roo and let a girl go broody). If you are looking to make a profit you are doing the right thing by establishing a direction you want to go in with your breeding project before jumping into. Good luck. We can't wait to see pics of your chicks when the time comes!

I'm just trying to make sure I'm doing everything correct before I jump in with both. And won't end up with a ton of chicks that aren't going to sell.

I was thinking of hatching some Cream Legbars in the spring as they are sexable at hatch and lay pretty blue eggs. I think backyard buyers want to know they are getting a female and colorful eggs are "in" right now. What do you guys think?

I'm definitely going to look into them because I've never heard of Cream Legbars.

If you're interested in breeding and selling chicks I'd go with a breed/variety that's in high demand right now. Something that isn't readily available at feed stores and hatcheries or sells our very quickly if it is available. With those criteria I'd probably go for one of these breeds/varieties: red laced blue Wyandottes, copper or blue copper Marans, Welsummers, Barnevelders. Lavender Orpingtons, Isabella Leghorns, or purebred Ameraucanas.

I wouldn't recommend shopping at Greenfire Farms, either. People spend a fortune on their imported breeds/varieties and never seem to make it back because tons of people are doing the same thing and their breeds become readily available very quickly. And, frankly, many of their breeds are only notable for their rarity and not much else. Go with something in between tried and true and brand new.

I'm looking to add a breed for souly hatching eggs and chicks for selling.
What are very popular breeds?
Lots of people have shown interest in my Speckled Sussex?
So in your opinion what is the most popular breed(s)?
I've been looking into Americanas, Araucanas, Brahmas, Cochins, things like that.
My biggest problem is color so also what colors are popular in breeds mentioned. Or other breeds.

I love Easter eggers and silkies.

So many breeds I have found just wonderful...among my favorites, are Silver-Laced Wyandottes, and Swedish Flowers. BEAUTIFUL, showy as my "live yard art" - great personalities, and good layers. Speckled Sussex are great too...Orpingtions...Favorelles....and...and...and, the list goes on

This is very true. It pays to do a little research as to what's selling in your area. Here just about any breed sells for 20+ dollars for a pullet but the rarer breeds go quicker and for more. And layers of dark brown eggs go for the most $ of all.

I just added five Speckled Sussex to my flock and already had one hen and too. I love them they lay large eggs, they are well tempered, and gorgeous of course.
