Mother of 4 (chickens)

It may be nothing more than that she snarfs up too much food at a time and gets it up her nasal passages, causing sneezing. I have a couple hens that do that.

Or it could be a crop disorder developing. For that, you need to check her crop first thing in the morning before she eats to be sure it's emptying overnight as it should. A full crop in the morning indicates a sick crop. You can treat it yourself. https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...w-to-know-which-one-youre-dealing-with.73607/

Look into her ears and throat for signs of pus and plaque. That would indicate an infection of the ear or throat and would require an antibiotic. Then you would need to see a vet.

Hi,
I’m in Newcastle Australia.
I have 4 x Isa brown hens. All started to lay right on the 20 week mark so I was thrilled to start getting 4 eggs per day.
6 months on and all is going well. We’re in a suburban situation but the girls have a lovely area to run around in, green grass and a cosy secure coup. I put bird spikes across the top of the 8 foot rendered walls we have around the property and it immediately had the right effect. No more escape attempts.
I now have one of my girls not laying and she seems to now be a bit of a loner. Mrs Brown is certainly the top bird in the group but poor Henrietta is now on the out.
I have noticed a slight snuffly sound and a bit of a head shake when she eats.
Ive wormed them twice now and also given them antibiotics.
It could just be an emotional thing (?)

It could be emotional...but I would run all the usual checks for things like lice & mites as well as worms. [An infestation will put them off the lay] Is she eating well? Roosting with the others @ night? Generally seem well in herself? If not I would look round for a good vet & get her checked out ~an avian specialist would be best. You could chat with your local produce store too. They are usually very knowledgeable & know what's going around ~ plus they have a whole range of products!
Are your birds immunized? I know there's quite a bit of controversy around immunization but it could make a difference to what she's possibly picked up?

Also, are you suffering smoke haze? That could affect your birds too.

Feel free to pop in & say Hi @

Welcome To BYC!

You only notice the head shake and snuffly sound when she eats?
I would do as suggested by @azygous look inside beak, check ears/nostrils and crop.

What did you worm with?
Snuffly sounds can be a number of things. If none of the above is the cause and you treated with antibiotics, it might be a virus or some type of bacterial infection that antibiotics won't treat.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I’ll keep an eye on Henrietta, she seems pretty good today. I will endeavour to post some pictures too.
Thanks for the advice too, much appreciated.

Cheers from down under

Hi, I can’t remember the name and have Boone’s the bottle as it had finished. pretty sure it’s Kilverm, a Levamisole product.
I’m going out now to have a peek down her throat. Wish me luck........
