Mother's Day Lockdown

Mike-All the chicks that hatched are doing wonderful. Very healthy unlike the ones I bought earlier in the year from a hatchery!! They are eating like pigs!!! And growing fast. They are 6 days today and many have wing feathers. They kids were sad I didn't bring the babies back on Monday. One boy really wanted a rooster. And he obsessed about it for the 21 days. I am serious. So, his egg was one that didn't hatch.

While the kids were out, we erased the number on his egg and switched. Told him his hatched the night before when we went home. I picked out a big black chick with a BIG comb. Probable roo, right? Told him that was his and yes it is probably going to be a rooster.

Aren't we good? He wants me to bring it back in August so he can see it grown up. Ahh. Kids! I have pictures of them playing with the chicks. They had a ball while I was packing up everything on Friday. I turned all the chicks loose in the circle. Since most can't talk, there was lots of signing and adults were helping interpret. I was listening to the conversations. What fun. The best part was hearing the laughter. That is the same no matter if you are Deaf or not.
We are all ready planning next years hatch. I can't wait. This was a great experience for them and myself. I only wished we lived in a more rural area where kids could actually have brought their chick home. We have a large Hispanic population and many of them told us about relatives in Mexico who keep chickens; Aunts, Grandparents, etc..
Next thing I need to do is start teaching about BYC! Right? Everyone should have at least one!! We visit all the kids communities. Now let's find out if they can have chickens??

Kathy

PS. We had one chick that is really different. As in, it hatched from a brown shell but it is yellow with a red head and feathered legs and feet! Got any guesses? Just wondering...

Wonderful story, Kathy! If you find that any of the children are able to have chickens, and if you're willing to do another project, I will supply you with more eggs. Anytime. Let me know when, and if you're interested.

I would really like to see a pic of the chicks, especially the big black one and the once you say has feathered legs. I do have a partridge cochin rooster and hen. It would have feathered legs from either of them. Post a pic and maybe I could give you a better idea.

Thanks,
Mike
