I have this pullet that is about as old as Bigfoot, she’s one I kept back that hatched from a different clutch that I’m going to use for the project. She’s got muffs/beard, vulture hocks, mottled, red/orange eyes and ok feathered feet.

I was going to ask about big foot and if she turned out to be a she! Yippee!

Your keepers are gorgeous! 😍

What an interesting thread! I want a couple mille fleur d’ccles hens when I’m able to add to my flock next and came across this thread.

I have found my marans and welsummer change color ALOT between hatching and 4 months of age.

How confident are you, @Egg Snatcher , that you won’t get the coloring that you’re looking for as your chickens mature?

I’m pretty confident that once they are 3-4 month old I’ll know what they’ll look like, yes when they molt they can look different, but by how my adults have molted they don’t change much in color.

These chicks including BigFoot that are more black I’m going to keep until they start to lay to decide if they stay or go, and to see if they get more mottled. I know for a fact that the mottled over gold Columbian pattern (Mille Fleur) feather out as a Mille Fleur and can possibly carry mottling, but to save time I’m just going to sell them and not worry about trying to see who is carrying the gene and who is not.

So here is one of the project chicks that hatched out in July.

He hatched out mostly black, you see how his chest has the mottled or gold Columbian pattern on his chest, he showed this at around 2 month old.

Here is 2 of the buff ones

The ones that hatch out all white but a black dot one their head feather out beautiful but didn’t show any leakage.

The more tuxedo colored ones feather out how I want. Mottled with brown red leakage. Hen on the left.

I’ve only had one that was tuxedo that had a mottled over gold Columbian pattern breast.

I am excited to see that these new pullets are showing brown red leakage.
Hope this answers you question.:)
