a year next spring. I adopted all 7 of my girls as adults.

ok so here is my question.
do you put a light out for them in winter?
Yes. Two lights. A normal 40 watt bulb which is one all day. And then a heat lamp for when the temps are below 0

so I was told by someone too put a light on at night for them that come off after 2 hours, but then some one said to put one that comes on at 5:30 am then off 8 am. Which one?

You never want to give chickens light at night. This really messes up their bodies. They can have light at light 6 am to 8 am but not all night.
