No, its not a stage in childhood, a 5 year old should not be cussing. Kids today are like that because parents set that example, kids will do whatever they see adults doing, so if parents cuss so will the kids, the parents are just too busy to fix it or choose to ignore it. I have 7 siblings they rarely if ever swear.

Those are all really good! :thumbsup

I guess you're right, in a certain sense, but with some I'd have to disagree.

It is a stage in childhood, because the child is going through a phase where they determine what the deem as appropriate and figuring out that some words should not be voiced, unless they feel the used word would help with whatever they might want to say. Learning and education takes time, understanding, and patience, especially with children.

Children swear because of three things; Other Children, Television and Adults. These three are the main cause of children learning swear words, however I don't think that's an incredibly bad thing. Because the kids know the words, then they can choose if they want to use a bad word. Eg., just like my siblings; they know all the swear words and they censor themselves, choosing not to use bad words. (And we live in Britain, imagine how hard that is.)
Children have amazing ways about them, the way they teach themselves is barmy, but it works. You can't just blame the parents, because the children are perfectly capable of changing their own behaviour. From as young as three years old, children display behaviours proving that they can make up their own mind; forming logistical decisions for the problems they face. They can choose to say the right thing. :P
