Mourning the loss of 2 pet chickens. ♡

Well, it's been awhile since I ve been here. Our family is mourning the loss of some chickens. I didn' t know I would be so bummed. I am a new yorker living in LA. City girl all the way. I didn' even want those chickens. But, I fell in love. We lost Fluffy a week ago. Some respiratory infection. Took her to the vet. She was such a good girl she even laid an egg that day. We paid $500 to try and save our family pet. It didn' work. The other 3 chickens are being given vetrx- but now the silkie has been showing signs of illness. (She was removed from the group) and she is being cared for in our home. Hand fed/watered. But it looks like she won' make it either. It breaks my heart. I am just trying to be ok that sometimes you can do everything for a living creature and you can not save them. I ve lost other pets- but they have all lived LONG lives. Fluffy had just turned 1 yr old. Nila the silkie 8 months. She was alive this morning but when I return from work - who knows what I will find. I feel guilty that we didn't spend another $500 to try and save Nila, but it is just too expensive.-we don' have it. And if she dies it will be $1000 gone. My friend grew up on a farm and she spoke to me about letting go of the control and allowing the circle of life to take its course. It helps, but my heart is sad and trying to be ok with the obstacles in life. Thank you for letting me grieve here and ramble on. I just needed someone to "speak" with.

Going forward, Fluffy has been sent to the state dr to see what type of virus. I don' know when we ll find out, but is there anything we can give the other girls? Right now it' vetrx and natural herbs, etc.

Sorry to hear about your birds. Did you get any information from the vet as to why they might be ill when you had the first bird vetted? Your doctor should have been able to test for infectious bronchitis or aspergillosis in bloodwork/lung culture.

What is your coop/run situation like? Do you keep it real clean, and what kind of bedding do you use? What do they eat? Chickens can get aspergillosis (a kind of fungal respiratory infection) from mold-infected bedding or food, so if their straw and bedding is dirty or damp, it can cultivate.

Unfortunately with many respiratory illnesses in poultry, they can have a high mortality rate depending on the strain of disease. So the "cold" can either be mild, or it can take out several chickens quickly almost all at once.

Very sorry for your losses. It is hard to loose any pet, fur, feathers, etc. I bawled my eyes out for almost a whole day the first time I lost a chick.

I usually start with plenty of water, iron free children's vitamins and natural herbs that are fairly harmless: tumeric, burdock (not other docks, they're unrelated) oregano (usually not the strong oil extract) a few days of goldenseal or echinacea, maybe olive leaf extract or Pau d'arco. Viruses can be rough. It usually comes down to the Bird's immune system doing most of the work. I hope the lab provides some useful information to help.

I have lost several close pets, and find the best thing to do is concentrate on the ones I still have. I don't forget, just continue on with their memories. I wish you the best.
