Was doing a search here on Chickens eating mice and found this thread. Yesterday I was out in the yard doing some chores and I noticed one of my 15 week old sex link girls had something in her beak as I went to investigate I saw that it was a mouse! She was brutal! She pinned it to the ground stabbed it with her beak and proceeded to start to tear it apart until she had to take it and run because the other girls were on to her find!!! I had another chicken that ate a mouse but she ate it whole I have never witnessed the brutality of these dinosaurs!! IT was both horrifying and fascinating at the same time. I had no idea before I saw my 1st girl swallow that mouse that chickens actually would kill and eat them I thought that was somewhat of a tall tale. Good to know my girls are on the job. Chickens are amazing! From what I am reading here it seems that there are breeds that are known for being good mousers so far that I know of I have had a sex link and a leghorn that eat miceI was reading on another site, that listed pretty much all the species' of chickens and general info about them to include personality traits, egg laying etc.
A few of the chickens were listed as 'great mousers'
This kind of took me by surprise. The thought of a chicken going after a mouse, just seemed odd, but then I thought on it and, well, mine will chase the hell out of a lizard or a small snake for a snack. I have also seen them find a rats nest and gobble down the babies. So while a mouse may seem on the larger side, the way I watch them bust up lizards and beat the crap out of stuff before they gobble it down, ok, I guess I can see a chicken going after mice, especially if it's one of the larger breeds.
GOOD TO KNOW !!
Brings me to question 2, has anyone had any experience with chickens that were good at catching / eating whatever mice. and the real question?
Do they go after moles too? About the same size, chickens love to scratch and dig? Anyone have experience with chickens going after moles? If so I know what my next species is going to be!
Thanks
Aaron
You are so right! LOL I am like come on can you just eat it already! Its brutal but I appreciate that they are helping keep the mouse population at bay!OH yah it's pretty brutal watching them tear up something they caught.
Sometimes I am like, alRIGHT already, just eat the damned thing, good god do you have to shred it like that!! Then other times you are like, well here comes the feathered mulching machine.. and then gobble gobble gulp! they manage to get whatever it was down whole, and you are like, how the heck did you get an ENTIRE RAT down your throat without choking!! If one gets something and another sees it, oh game on, the tug o war is going down! Lizard gizzard and gopher guts, beetle juice and soldier fly butts, If it's catchable you can be sure, it's going to be eaten by her - her - and HER ! You better be nimble and better be quick, or you are going to get splattered with green gooey ick !
