My Silkie hen is doing this mouth breathing thing where it appears that she’s panting. What could be the cause of this? I have a video but I’m not sure if I can post it.

Panting is one way they cool off (evaporation from the inside like dogs).. if it's warm.. being the most simple explanation. Is she holding her wings out slightly or making other indicators? Sometimes they will do that if held a certain way.

Do you hear any wheezing? See anything stuck in the throat?

One commonly blamed cause, less often proven and considered rare but should be mentioned/considered.. gape worm infection.

On the extreme end.. open mouth breathing can be a symptom of organ failure (heart, kidney, liver, etc) and impending death.. PLEASE don't be fear mongered by this statement!

Hoping everything is actually well! :fl

Thank you for the reply! Other than the occasional mouth breathing she’s perfectly normal. I’ll continue to keep an eye on her and look for any further indications of stress or illness. Thanks for the helpful information. 🙂
